Freaking out!! TMI, don’t read if squeamish

Ok, this isn’t an AIBU but I’m freaking out here, so posting for traffic. Please don’t read if you’re eating!

I’m currently on my period and when I was in the shower earlier, a huge blood clot came out of me. It was so big it blocked the drain. It actually really scared me. I do tend to have heavy periods, some months more so than others, but rarely get much pain other than a migraine. I did have sharp stomach pains yesterday, but it was higher in my stomach than period pains tend to be, and more like the odd sharp pain that would last a second or two and then go, so not cramping. I thought at the time I’d pulled a muscle from working out or something, so not sure it’s related.

I happen to have a smear booked for next week so will be speaking to a doctor then, but has anyone experienced this or similar? Not sure how worried I should be.

Thank you!

Have you ever had them before?

DontBiteTheBoobThatFeedsYou · 23/07/2021 21:43

It's just that if that happened to me I wouldn't bat an eyelid.

But I've always had Periods From Hell, so what is normal for me might be horrifying for someone else.

Decidual cast? Try Google and see it out looks similar.

I am in no way medical but I have experienced this. I am only replying as I know it can be alarming! Heavy periods do sometimes produce these clots and it is not necessarily anything to worry about. Mine started as I got older, mid to late 40s, not sure how old you are but I think it is more common approaching menopause. You have said you will check when you have your smear which is wise but please don't panic! There will be many women who have had the same.

irresistibleoverwhelm · 23/07/2021 21:48

I’ve had random big clots in normal periods for no apparent reason, no it’s not unheard of. If you’ve had sex this month could it be a very early failed pg?

Otherwise I think it can just be quite random - there’s a specific chemical that breaks the clots of uterine lining down into blood to pass through the cervix, but sometimes it all pools in the bottom of the uterus and just happens to all come out a bit too fast before that works.

You could see the GP if you are worried and want it checked out.

I had a lot of big clots last month that all came out in the shower. TMI but I had just masturbated to relieve period pain, so I assumed that my cervix had just opened a little more than usual and it had all come out a bit fast! Was a bit Shock but biting seemed to be wrong (and I’m def not pg). Shortened my period a lot though which was a bonus.

irresistibleoverwhelm · 23/07/2021 21:49

*nothing, not biting! Bloody autocorrect.

Takingabreakagain · 23/07/2021 21:49

Have you had a vaccine recently? There's been a thread about how some women's periods have been affected - it may be related to that.

That’s reassuring to know, it was just so huge!! Its not happened before, I’ve always had heavy periods, the odd flooding incident, but not this.

Maybe 8 months to a year ago now, I thought I had appendicitis one night, really terrible pain, almost made me throw up. So I called 101, and by the time a doctor called me, it was starting to get better, so not appendicitis, but she said it could be an ovarian cyst. Because of COVID, I couldn’t get a doctors appointment without a fight, so just sort of forgot about it stupidly, but now that’s on my mind!

After my first pfizer I had a really horrendous period, never had one like it before!

DysmalRadius · 23/07/2021 21:51

I was just coming on to say that about the vaccine - the two paid I had following each dose were heavy and with lots of clots.

FreakingOut1011 · 23/07/2021 21:54

Thanks, I just googled, it’s not that. Definitely just looked like a huge blood clot rather than any tissue.

Thank you everyone, you’ve calmed me down a bit! I’m 38, so maybe it could be age related? I did have my second vaccine on Monday, I have heard from women who have reported their periods changing after having it, but I’d completely forgotten that in my panic!

Mine was Pfizer too - hopefully it’s just do to that then and not my insides falling out 😆

After my 2nd jab I had the period from hell. I got up in the night for a wee and thought we’d left a tap dripping as I could hear water spashing. It was me, bleeding onto our (thankfully) laminate flooring. I was so heavy it left splash marks on the skirting board.

topwings · 23/07/2021 21:56

I regularly had large clots - they could be about half the size of my palm. They weren't painful and tbh if I had large clots, my period was shorter so if I was at home, I didn't mind them.

I went through years of fertility treatment with various doctors and clinics. Everyone of them just gave me a shrug when I told them about the clots.

Fertility treatment was successful and clots (and periods in general) have lessened after pregnancy.

peboh · 23/07/2021 21:57

In theory, if you have a clot that is bigger than a 50p you should get checked out. However some people do just pass really large clots ( I personally do) if you're concerned, it's always worth ringing up 111 to see if you can get an out of hours appointment tomorrow to get some blood tests to rule out anything sinister.

cricketmum84 · 23/07/2021 21:58

I've had this once before. It was that big that I actually felt it come out of me whilst walking round the shops.... BlushConfused

Clear smear tests and nothing wrong with me and haven't experienced it since. Women's bodies are weird lol

Dollpiglet · 23/07/2021 21:58

I had my second Pfizer on Tuesday and was also on the second day of my period and it immediately turned to flooding and I've been changing an ultra tampon and night pad every 20 mins to cope with it. It's just starting to slow down a little now. The same thing happened after my first dose and I've been spotting between the two doses non stop.

BobbinThreadbare123 · 23/07/2021 22:00

I was also coming on to say "vaccine?". My periods have been absolutely hideous since my jabs. I had the AZ. Painful, heavy etc. Not my usual.

Oh my god!! I mentioned hearing about these issues to the person giving me my first jab, but she hadn’t heard of it. There seems to be very little medical information about it. Have they gone back to normal since, or too soon to know?

I was also going to ask if you’d had Pfizer recently. I had a really clotty period afterwards and friends have reported the same.

Gentleness · 23/07/2021 22:03

My next period after my 2nd Pfizer jab was 5 times worse than usual. I missed the one that should have come 2-3 days after the jab but the next one came right on time and with bells on. Please report it on Yellow Card - it's not been recognised as a side effect yet and it would be so much less scary if people were warned.

Thank you, I will. I can’t believe how common this side effect seems to be, and it’s still not recognised - sums up the state of women’s healthcare.

Thanks so much everyone. A friend just suggested fibroids too, she’s had them and said one symptom she had was blood clots. Hopefully I’ll find out next week if that’s the case, and they don’t sound too worrying.

On a practical note might be an idea to top up on iron supplement if it was super heavy. I can remember my mil telling me she used to pass large clots like that in the 10 or so years prior to menopause

I used to get what I referred to as big chunks of liver, really solid lumps. Sometimes I’d get incredibly bad cramps just before they came out. 🤢
