Is it me or are Facebook's censors being a bit heavy handed here?

So, in a silly conversation recently with my 12 year old son, I said that (and I quote) "All boys are stinky!". I posted this conversation on FB because it was funny! Almost immediately, FB's algorithm picked it up and I got a warning for promoting hate speech!
Today, in a conversation with a mate about an ongoing Twitter row I have been in for over a year (I mentioned the breed of my cat and the tweet was flagged as racist) I made the "all boys are stinky" comment again and lo and behold, I get another warning!! I appealed it and the appeal was rejected.
How can any sane human look at this and think "yup, definitely hate speech!"?!?

Facebook moderation has been mental recently. I know of a few people in the same fan group of a comedy show as me who have been thrown in facebook jail for posting quotes from the show, one of which contained the highly offensive word "fanny" Hmm.

MissConductUS · 22/07/2021 19:18

A human being didn't look at it. FB algorithms have to screen millions of comments an hour. Don't expect a nuanced appreciation for humor.

SavageBeauty73 · 22/07/2021 19:19

Yes. I told my friend she had nice tits for a joke and I got a 30 day ban

Facebook allows all sorts of hate speech, but if your combination of words is picked up by their algorithms, you're in trouble! It's definitely not you.

The court finding against Tommy Robinson today has brought out all the usual Islamophobia/ xenophobia, and FB thinks it's all good. Yet I got a warning for referring to my fat thighs Grin

Shmithecat2 · 22/07/2021 19:22

I got thrown in jail for saying men are useless. Apparently, that's hate speech Confused

Theunamedcat · 22/07/2021 19:26

Anti women speech was deemed fine when I flagged it as was racist speech so I called a guy a fucking cunt and accepted a warning over it im going to download my data soon including all my photos for when I get banned

plodalong12 · 22/07/2021 19:27

Facebook algorithms pick up on sentences with “boys/men are X” no matter what X is. Not sure if it’s the same with girls/women

celticecho · 22/07/2021 19:27

This is the Twitter issue - I have just taken this screenshot so you can see the date this all started.
As far as pissing anyone off, no I don't believe so. When posting these, they were flagged instantly. Nobody would have had time to read them and then flag them.

This. Facebook and Instagram moderation is horrific. Twitter is normally a lot better and I find does remove actual hate speech.
plodalong12 · 22/07/2021 19:32

Further to my post above:

Question: According to your policies “men are trash” is considered tier-one hate speech. So what that means is that our classifiers are able to automatically delete most of the posts or comments that have this phrase in it. [Why?]

Mark Zuckerberg: The hate speech policies are the most fraught. So I’ll walk you through the reasoning of how we got to this policy. And so there are a few things that are going on that I think you want to think about. So one is, gender is a protected category. So substitute in your mind while you’re thinking through this, what if this were “Muslims are trash,” right? You would not want that on the service.

dementedma · 22/07/2021 19:33

I got a 24 hour ban for telling my brother I was going to punch him for sending me a photo of a huge spider!

GNCQ · 22/07/2021 19:43

I got permanently Twitter banned for a "men aren't women though" style comment, yet I reported over 100 Tweets aimed at me directly some of which included a want to "tear apart my arsehole" and rape threats. None of those obviously violent Tweets were taken down and the users were not banned for breaking any guidelines.

It's all fucked.

You sound quite unlucky or as PP said maybe someone doesn't like you and is maliciously reporting your innocuous comments?

I mean seriously "I want to tear apart your arsehole" to me - I report it. No action. Later on I am banned. I still can't believe it.

That warning is for the c**n word, isn't that also racial slur? The alogarityhm would have detected it as a racial slur not a name of a cat breed
Nancydrawn · 22/07/2021 21:48

The news just made the rounds here that a NY gardening group got in trouble for saying their favorite tool was a "push pull hoe" and, regarding bugs, "Kill them all. Drown them in soapy water." I found it very amusing.

celticecho · 22/07/2021 22:02

I am aware of the racial slur that is sadly included in my cat's breed name, but it's the name of the breed and I can't do anything about that - I did appeal to Twitter twice, both times linking to MC pedigree sites and Wikipedia, but each time, the appeal was rejected.

For clarity to those who don't know about the breed, the last part of the name is derived from Raccoon. Back when the breed was first discovered in Maine, people thought that because the cats have rings on their tails, the were a feline crossed with a raccoon and the name stuck. They are stunning cats and one of (if not the) largest domestic cat breed in the world!

This is why forums are better. Moderations is by humans, even for very large forums like MN.

Facebook, Twitter and other parts of the internet have become too political.

Late 90s / early 00s internet was a much better place and forums were still around then.

Fros · 22/07/2021 22:41

One of my friends got so fed up with being in FB jail, she now censors out one or two letters from half the words - and then uses the censored letters to end her posts with random words Dumbledor style.
It's fucking hilarious.

I also follow someone who purposely miss-spells words which might trigger FB jail, personally I find it annoying, but I can understand why they're doing it

Queynte13 · 22/07/2021 22:49

I got threatened with a ban and my comment deleted for saying "American's are weird". It was on a post about putting peanut butter dip with a deep fried pickle hotdog thing.

Hate speech, apparently, but I stand by it.

You can still say Maine Coon on MN.

I want one of those beauties! 😍
Yours is gorgeous.

Ratalie · 23/07/2021 03:48

To be honest, I think social media companies need to do a lot more to tackle hate speech on their platforms. Not particularly concerned if the algorithms mess up from time to time.

Singlebutmarried · 23/07/2021 07:43

Butt monkey also isn’t allowed on FB. Nor is referring to a female dog as a bitch.

Bonkers

lazee · 23/07/2021 10:03

I called a friend a " tool"
Got a ban 🤷‍♀️
