To think there are no food shortages?

Keep seeing on the news/social media about food shortages due to brexit and the “pingdemic” (is it just me that despises this word 😣) photos of empty shelves similar to pre first lockdown.
But my local supermarkets are literally no different to usual? AIBU to think it’s all over the top?

That's how it started last time thoughConfused

kowari · 22/07/2021 07:17

My local Aldi was fine. There have been occasional missing fruit and veg items but I just buy something different instead.

Manzanilla55 · 22/07/2021 07:17

Just noticed this year Asda is no longer selling St Dalfour jam so I go to Tescos instead for it. That is the only discernible change.

Wingingthis · 22/07/2021 07:17

@Makemineamediumone you mean the media running stories on it so everyone stockpiled ?

This is how the panic buying starts, i bet people today will buy 'just an extra one' of stuff and before you know it shelves are empty and the media has whipped everyone up into a frenzy.

elizabethdraper · 22/07/2021 07:18

Sure there are no food shortages in NI
Does that make you feel better?

CurlyWurlyTwos · 22/07/2021 07:20

It’s noticeable where I shop - but because you haven’t experienced it, it mustn’t be true 🙄.

Soubriquet · 22/07/2021 07:20

I work in a shop…. There are empty gaps everywhere and it’s making it difficult to do my job

Deliveries are not turning up, and when they do, they are stripped almost immediately because we’ve been low on stock

Unanananana · 22/07/2021 07:21

There are no food shortages. There is lower number of staff available to put stock on shelves because of that stupid, not fit for purpose Covid app.

Nice one social media! Let the panic buying commence Hmm

Lockheart · 22/07/2021 07:21

Think whatever you like, but the photos in various news outlets would prove you wrong.

Comedycook · 22/07/2021 07:21

Lots of shortages where I am...

WiltingSpinach · 22/07/2021 07:23

Loads of gaps where I am too

PheasantsNest · 22/07/2021 07:24

We went shopping yesterday. Massive shelf gaps in Asda and Tesco.

Toottooot · 22/07/2021 07:24

Whole pasta shelf wiped out - so aye there’s definitely shortages creeping back in. Whether or not it’s being caused by the pingdemic.

UKhun · 22/07/2021 07:28

No lettuce, bagged salad, water or tomatoes in Asda last night, very few yogurts. Several aisle ends completely bare. This isn't the sort of stuff that gets panic bought so reckon the stories of supply chain difficulties are true.
There was plenty of bread and still milk left.

Plus the lorry driver crisis meaning less.deliveries. There is food, it just isn't in the shops
Bagelsandbrie · 22/07/2021 07:28

No change here - yet. But maybe it will reach us soon!

Wingingthis · 22/07/2021 07:28

Okay people no need to get rude!! I’m not saying it’s not true I’m just wondering if it was over the top…wouldn’t be unheard of for the media to exaggerate!!

Mollymalone123 · 22/07/2021 07:29

There are gaps but some if the problems here have been due to the refrigerated cabinets breaking down in the heat so has created extra issues plus with a mini heatwave they couldn’t keep up with the demand for lots of the bbq bits and different drinks etc- just the odd bits I couldn’t get from my shop.

SquashMinusIsShit · 22/07/2021 07:29

I work in retail, it is very true

goteam · 22/07/2021 07:29

Lots of shortages where I am but with fresh food in chiller cabinets. Doesn't seem to be an issue with long life food.

DaisyWaldron · 22/07/2021 07:30

I've been having trouble buying stuff for the past month. There's always been a suitable substitution, (apart from the cauliflower and kale and romaine lettuce shortages a while ago) but with stuff like coffee beans I've had to switch types, and I haven't been able to get hold of a lot of imported brands. And some things that are not particularly obscure aren't even being made any more (liquorice Catherine wheels, Waitrose lapsang souchong teabags).

theemmadilemma · 22/07/2021 07:31

Lots of gaps. Lots of things difficult to get. Brands I have to shop around to get which were once in every shop but due to shortages I have to try to find which shop got delivery. I find it more difficult to believe someone isn't seeing this.

lokomojo · 22/07/2021 07:32

No shortages here, except hot dog buns because of the weather!

DaisyWaldron · 22/07/2021 07:32

I don't know why I said month, because it's been going on for longer, but has definitely been getting worse recently.
