Schools are so hot

bobcatbobcat · 20/07/2021 21:15

DCs schools I think a 90s build. Single storey.

It is SO hot. Lots of south facing classrooms with massive patio doors.

Tomorrow they have speech day/assembly thing. 2hrs sitting on benches in the playground in the full sun Confused

AIBU to think it's impossible to kids keep cool when it's this hot and school is like a greenhouse? And that maybe the assembly is a bad idea

Can schools do anything right OP?

PumpkinPie2016 · 20/07/2021 21:32

Yes, schools are hot at the moment. I work in a secondary which is a very modern building and it's still hot.

That said,it's hot everywhere at the moment.

Sun hats, sun cream, plenty of water, thin clothes and staying in shade where possible are all fairly simple things to do to help. Not much else can be done.

LadyCatStark · 20/07/2021 21:33

It’s madness that some schools still haven’t broken up! It’s so late this year!

Agree.

@Demelza82 I think most of my teacher friends would wholeheartedly agree that schools are stupidly hot and not having broken up yet is bloody stupid.

TotorosCatBus · 20/07/2021 21:35

Yanbu

So glad we broke up last Friday.

LadyCatStark · 20/07/2021 22:15

DS broke up last Wednesday and I work directly for the council and follow standard council holidays and broke up today. Some schools in our area are going to Thursday! Why would you go on longer than the official end of the year (I know they’ll have had the days elsewhere but I don’t understand why any schools would want to prolong the end of term!).

casualnamechange · 20/07/2021 22:18

Fucking tell me about it. 35 degrees in my classroom. I open all the windows and basically tolerate it for as long as we can and then go outside. It’s a joke. I passed out on the sofa at 6pm last night and slept until 6:30am, occasionally waking up incredibly dizzy and with a pounding headache.

Waveafterwaveslowlydrifting · 20/07/2021 22:20

I genuinely think I have heat stroke today after teaching in a 30 degree plus classroom. It's exhausting and stressful. My year 1s expect me to make the classroom cooler for them and I can't!

kowari · 20/07/2021 22:23

Assembly is very silly idea if they are sitting in full sun in this weather, I would keep my child home in those circumstances. If there was anywhere they could gather on the grass in the shade, and be finished by 11am then they should do that or else cancel.

Third week in July is usual from schools in England. As someone commented earlier, can schools do anything right for some parents? Do you think they enjpy being in hot rooms any more that your children?

In six months time the same moaners will be moaning that their dear child's school is too cold!

Or that their dc were made to do outdoor PE in the rain or they couldn't play outside because of the rain etc etc.

FenceSplinters · 20/07/2021 22:54

Yes schools are bloody hot at the moment. 30 hot, sweaty, kranky teenagers in a small room, with windows that are painted shut, and we’re still expected to perform, with the kids working at 100% because someone is coming around to observe that lessons are still meaningful. It’s not fun for anybody.

Seesawmummadaw · 20/07/2021 22:56

Everywhere is hot. Chill out

Beesinthegarden · 20/07/2021 23:08

Secondary schools making the students wear long trousers and blazers is what gets my goat

HeartIess · 20/07/2021 23:12

I never understand why England doesn’t just adjust the holidays to the Scottish configuration: out for all of July and half of august

It’s always insane to me that English kids are sweating through this weather until August kicks off ... by which time it’s invariably cooler Hmm

This, it’s hot in the whole of the UK, unsurprisingly schools are hot too.

Someone will be along to blame the teachers soon I’m sure - guess what if you were home schooling it would be hot too Grin

I agree, and it seems better timing to have the summer holidays in the middle of the year. By August the weather usually turns rubbish and the evenings are noticeably shorter. I grew up and did my schooling in Scotland, and even after 22 years in England and having two kids go to school here I still wonder at the late summer holidays!

Same here. While the teachers wear their short sleeves Angry
BogRollBOGOF · 20/07/2021 23:36

I don't miss 35⁰C portacabins with my feet being so swollen by p5 that even my wide-fitting Birkenstocks ceased to fit on my feet.

SMT can manage more reasonable uniform demands, and some do.
Building regs could be better for new buildings, but that's an incredibly slow replacement timescale.

I reckon Scotland have the better holday season. Make the summer earlier, take a week off and split a longer autumn into 3 shorter terms.

FenceSplinters · 21/07/2021 16:45

Please remember it’s not the teachers that set the rules - they just have to enforce them.
