Reading the thread on climate change I just realised that people don't give a sh*t about others, so the whole 'I'll be wearing my mask until I die' is only virtue signalling and most do it because they care about themselves. I honestly feel better about my decision not to wear a mask anymore (and I'm in my legal right to do it!). As long as others are still driving everywhere, eating meat, buying tons of useless crap that can't be recycled I won't be wearing my mask to 'protect others'.

I do what I can within the means that I have. I don't make my choices depending on other peoples

ZingDramaQueenOfSheeba · 20/07/2021 19:26

that's a bizarre kind of revenge🤣

you do realise that you could whatever you wanted REGARDLESS of what others decide to do, don't you?

Runssometimes · 20/07/2021 19:28

You not wearing your mask and passing covid onto a clinically vulnerable person could have a direct and potentially fatal impact on someone, could be within weeks. Actions to reduce personal CO2 contributes to a cumulative effect which will mean hardship for millions of people in years to come. Climate change is already happening - famine, drought, species collapse and mass migration is already happening and affecting people and it’s going to get worse. Individual actions and purchase choices influence companies help but the real action to halt it will only be possible at international and government level. So they are not directly comparable, in the simplified example in your OP.

DrSbaitso · 20/07/2021 19:29

Have you considered that the people who are still driving everywhere, eating meat, buying tons of useless crap that can't be recycledare using the exact same logic as you?

LolaButt · 20/07/2021 19:33

You do you.

I’m wearing a mask because right now with cases so high I think it’s the right thing to do morally.

I recycle because it’s the right thing to do and also because I can’t fit all the rubbish and recycling in my bin.

I changed my car from a diesel to a petrol to reduce emissions although I do still need to drive I have tried to lessen my environmental impact.

I’ve cut our families meat consumption by half and try to buy organic where financially possible.

A lot of people are making changes in part for the right reason. But, like any action, is there anything altruistic?

MacSmirving · 20/07/2021 19:33

Perhaps you would be prepared to wear your mask to help protect those of us who do try quite hard to protect the environment? 🙂

MrsTerryPratchett · 20/07/2021 19:35

Do what you want but don't dress it up as some kind of noble political statement.

You don't want to. There's no way to know if the person you infect is Gandhi or Trump.

Another888 · 20/07/2021 19:39

YANBatallU

A lot of people are unbelievably hypocritical when it comes to covid. People should be judged on all their actions combined but for some reason whether someone follows covid rules to the letter overules everything else🤔
I say this as someone vaccinated who will continue to wear masks indoors as it doesn't bother me.

PrincessKaguya · 20/07/2021 19:50

It's not a revenge. I'm asthmatic and exempt from wearing mask, although I tried to wear it during pandemic for 'greater good'. Yet now I'm being called selfish for not protecting the same people that directly contribute to my health problems, yet they don't care!

This is why I don't believe in humans generally doing the right thing and relying on personal responsibility. It's also why I since Seeing climate change and our liberal approach to covid I am now a firm believer in Chinese style authoritarianism.

SourAppleChew · 20/07/2021 20:04

I agree a lot of people are selfish. But you can't moan about them if you're going to make a conscious decision to join them.

FromageRay · 20/07/2021 20:07

In your OP you say it's your decision and legal right to not wear a mask, now you're exempt.
Has anyone IRL asked you why you aren't wearing one? Seems like you just want to be heard.

Pumperthepumper · 20/07/2021 20:07

I honestly think people on mumsnet think being a hypocrite is the worst thing someone can be. To the extent they’ll actually behave really badly just so they’re not a hypocrite. It’s mad.

user27424799642256 · 20/07/2021 20:13

I think using English law as your moral system sets the bar in the wrong place tbh, at least if you're doing it in such a blind "if it's legal than it's moral" way.

Law is just about who has power and what they wish to achieve - not right and wrong.

If you're not wearing a mask because you can't wear a mask then that's nothing to do with being selfish and you are not who people mean when they say that.

MoMuntervary · 20/07/2021 20:15

Hmm. I'm CEV and have also taken lots of steps to protect the environment and reduce our emissions. So I am trying to protect you (in the sense that you live on this planet) so maybe you could protect me too?

Had it occurred to you that the overlap between those vulnerable to air pollution and Covid is probably quite high?

namcybotwinbloom · 20/07/2021 20:22

It seems like comparing apples to cheese. No sense.

QueenBee52 · 20/07/2021 20:31

You do You OP 🤣🎉

Demelza82 · 20/07/2021 20:40

You sound angry and dim as shit OP

ScreamingMeMe · 20/07/2021 20:41

Eh????

Persephoned · 20/07/2021 22:38

This. We can all do what we think is best and I respect people who have the integrity to act with their own views. I find it odd that you would do othwise. I try and act in the best way I can
