AIBU to ask if anyone fully understands Go Compare's £250 free excess cover?

Obviously posting for traffic and apologies for being too stupid to fully understand this, but basically, Is there a catch?

I'm looking at car ins quotes.

quote one £199 with £250 excess.

quote two £170 with the same company through GC with £400 excess. (£150 compulsory £250 voluntary) then says £250 free excess cover.

So AINBU to think that the GC option is the better deal, because the £400 excess is actually only £150 excess with the free cover?

or AIBU - and a bit daft - to fall for this?

Thank you in advance if you can make sense of it.

Bumping. Am I over thinking this?

You will need £400 upfront and I suppose the risk is that go compare will not refund you the £250 for whatever reason.

I think that's what worries me... Is it going to be one of those small print things that aren't worth having unless there is a blue moon in a month with an r in it?
