Do I need to see a doctor?

It’s on my ankle and I’ve noticed it for ages but today I’ve noticed it’s bigger than before...

Does it feel soft or hard ?
Have you injured it ?

Dillidilly · 20/07/2021 11:26

Stress fracture?
I had something similar and it only showed up on an MRI rather than x-ray.
Is it hugely painful? Mine was.

giletrouge · 20/07/2021 11:26

Does it hurt? Have you twisted your ankle? Is it soft or hard?
I think a doc needs to see it really. I mean - it's a swelling, but no one can really say why it's swollen without a lot more info!

Powertothepetal · 20/07/2021 11:30

Not at all painful and yes I have injured both in the past.
If I sit for a long period they are both incredibly stiff and sometimes ‘crack’ very painfully if I get up without rotating them around first.

If I do an ankle circle on either ankle they both click/pop every rotation.
One of them had an extremely bad sprain but can’t remember which ankle!
But I’ve injured both years ago.

It feel soft and squishy/jelly like 🤢

It can be from the heat. I have it

Dubbadubbadumdum · 20/07/2021 11:34

Bursitis. It's the sinovial fluid in the joint bursting out from where it should be. I get it in my knee after an injury from years ago, which also pops and cracks like mad. You can get it drained if it irritates or upsets you, but it won't do any harm.

lawandgin · 20/07/2021 11:36

Could it be a ganglion cyst? I've one on my wrist and I know a few people who hand also had them on their hands and feet. You can have an op to remove but I've decided against it as it doesn't really bother me although it does ache slightly when I type for extended periods. There's the risk of nerve damage when they're drained and they often come back too.

Me too! overweight as well, which probably doesn't help Grin
SchrodingersImmigrant · 20/07/2021 12:00

@OrchestraOfWankery 🙈 yup. It did get better since I lotlst loads, but it's always bit there and gets bigger with heatwave

BobaTea · 24/01/2022 15:30

@Dubbadubbadumdum, I think I have it on my knee too. It's not painful but feels soft a squishy. I have it for quite a while but waiting to see a doctor this week.

Did you get treatments from the doctors? I've left it for quite a while, would it cause any damage?

SomewhereOnlyIKnow · 24/01/2022 15:32

Looks like a lipoma.

Wreath21 · 24/01/2022 15:33

It might be a lipoma (fatty cyst). I have one on my shoulder. They are harmless. Mind you, it's not a bad idea to consult a doctor in case it's something else.

donkeymcdonkface · 24/01/2022 15:48

Looks like a ganglion to me - it would be an odd place for a lipoma as there is not much fat on the ankle.
Your GP can refer you for an ultrasound scan which would confirm!

BobaTea · 24/01/2022 21:49

@Powertothepetal, did you find out what it is?

janicewheeler · 24/01/2022 22:00

I think possibly Ganglion too. You get them on joints, so wrists, ankles etc and some can get golf ball sized

Paperyfish · 24/01/2022 22:02

I have ganglion cysts on my ankle just there. I plan to get them removed one day, but they don’t bother me that much. Worth a quick dr check though.

user1473878824 · 24/01/2022 22:25

Ganglions tend to be solid lumps though don’t they? I have one on my ankle and it’s more like a marble than anything squishy.

VelvetChairGirl · 24/01/2022 22:29

ganglion cyst maybe and they are softish they are leaking lube from the joints, I had one on my wrist got an appointment for a scan to make sure that was what it was, but it healed within a month so scan wasn't needed.
