Why do people act dumb like this?

Are people really that self unaware?
Sometimes I hear of so many people both on here and off utterly baffled as to why someone is annoyed at them. Yet think nothing of their own behaviour that has created the problem. Is it like a form of gaslighting or just severe lack of awareness?

Example?

When someone has been blatantly messing a friend around for example, changing plans regularly, not treating them respectfully etc. Then coming on here and saying 'Why is my friend being quiet or distant with me?' It's pretty obvious is it not?
I see it offline as well. I think people just have a shocking level of self awareness at times and would do well to put themselves in other people's shoes

Well- we only hear one side of the story.

It is really uncomfortable to be ' self aware', so people justify/forget/re-imagine their behaviour.

Lots certainly do. I truly think people believe what is comfortable, not what is true

I completely agree @spotcheck

The fact that you've referred to people as 'dumb' suggests you need to consider your own awareness and the offence you might cause.

Oh god yes! You only have to read the threads about children's parties where a contingent always have a 'good' reason they don't bother to reply to invitations or why it's fine to bring siblings along.

Not even the most abrasive person (sometimes this person is me) thinks of themself as rude, badly educated, racist or whatever. People can always find excuses for themselves, even for behaviour they'd roundly condemn in anyone else.
