AIBU: Neighbours watering our garden

I’m not sure what to think of this: Our neighbours have a very far reaching watering system that completely soakes our entire garden, including us, if we get caught unawares. It reaches over a 2 m high fence and across the width of the garden on our side. On the one hand it’s useful, on the other we can’t use the garden all evening, because they will turn it on most nights at around 8:00 p.m. AIBU to object to this? Btw they have not asked if this is ok.

Have you talked to them about it?

lannistunut · 19/07/2021 21:14

You just need to ask them to please stop, and hopefully they will.

They are clearly being unreasonable as you should be able to enjoy your own property.

If they don;t stop, then you may have an issue.

BoattoBolivia · 19/07/2021 21:15

I think you would be perfectly within your rights to politely explain this to them and suggest they put it on a little later so you can use your garden. That's an impressive reach!

TheNewKaren · 19/07/2021 21:15

No - I’m worried about repercussions. We don’t know them. We have also just recently moved here.

MrsSkylerWhite · 19/07/2021 21:16

I’d be delighted!
I don’t generally use the garden after 8 though but can see how that would be annoying if you do.

underneaththeash · 19/07/2021 21:16

They probably don't realise. Just pop round and let them know.

NautaOcts · 19/07/2021 21:16

They might not realise it’s spraying you?
How weird not to just mention it to them first! Unless there’s a backstory which would give you cause to worry about ‘repercussions’?

TheNewKaren · 19/07/2021 21:17

It’s the sort of thing farmers use to water a field, but not a suburban back garden Angry

OP posts:
NoIDontWatchLoveIsland · 19/07/2021 21:17

I would just ask if they can delay the watering until 10pm explaining that its stopping you using your garden, and point them to the many timer systems available for a relatively insignificant amount of money.

purpleme12 · 19/07/2021 21:17

There's only one way to resolve this. To speak to them

KarmaStar · 19/07/2021 21:18

Talk to them!they might not be aware it's a problem.
Otherwise erect a higher fence.
Hopefully they can simply adjust the system and it's solved.😀

TheNewKaren · 19/07/2021 21:18

They have to realise. It’s in full view of their terrace. Where do they think the water is going?

OP posts:
Uramaki · 19/07/2021 21:19

You will have to speak to them. Or maybe they do it because you are really really noisy.

Uramaki · 19/07/2021 21:19

They might think your garden looks like it needs a water so are doing you a favour?
HummingBeeBox · 19/07/2021 21:20

They probably have no idea it's soaking your garden. Go knock and talk to them.

Nicknacky · 19/07/2021 21:20

Why would you worry about repercussions?

Goodness me, just go speak to them.

TheNewKaren · 19/07/2021 21:21

We are very quiet. They, on the other hand, are quite noisy, but I have no issue with that.

OP posts:
purpleme12 · 19/07/2021 21:23

You're clearly determined not to talk to them so you'll have to put up with it

TheNewKaren · 19/07/2021 21:24

The kids are thinking just to accept it and hope they will stop.

OP posts:
beautifullymad · 19/07/2021 21:26

Just knock on the door and introduce yourself. Say that you appreciate the water from their sprinklers helping your garden but would they mind angling it away slightly so you can use your garden in the evenings.

They either don't realise it's hitting your garden or think they are doing you a favour watering your garden at the same time.

PickAChew · 19/07/2021 21:27

Why would they stop? You have given them no reason to.

It's like territory marking on a grand scale.

It's also a bloody waste of water.

doorornottodoor · 19/07/2021 21:27

Why can’t you go and ask them nicely? Hi, new neighbours. Would you mind putting your sprinklers m later as the moment it means we can’t go out in the garden after 8? That’s great, thanks very much. The end.
GintyMcGinty · 19/07/2021 21:29

You need to speak to them.

They are not mind readers. They may think they are doing you a favour.

No need to fall out. Just ask them nicely.

Singlebutmarried · 19/07/2021 21:31

Hi neighbours. Your garden watering is getting ours too.

Can you adjust it please as we want to use the garden of an evening and not get soaked.

Thanks.

ZombieEthel · 19/07/2021 21:31

Why are you worried about repercussions? They're just your neighbours, not the mafia.
