DH says I’m controlling (lighthearted)

Going on holiday (family holiday home only about 100 miles from home). Usually we leave toys for DS at the home but last year we donated them to charity as he outgrew them. DH and DS have been to the holiday home a couple of times since without me.

DD (5) packed his own toy bag. DH gives him full responsibility to do it: literally gives him a large bag for life and tells him to pack his toys.

Today I wanted to have a wee look at what he packed. DH laughed and told me I was being controlling trying to inspect (and probably change) which toys DS takes on holiday.

Yabu- let DS chose his own toys, you don’t need to be nosey. If he has chosen badly he’ll be the one who is bored

Yanbu- I too would want to check what a 5 year old has packed

YABU. Let him choose his toys but I'd check to ensure that he hasn't packed the remote control, coffee machine, selection of mini screwdrivers and a long forgotten, half chewed sausage.

I would run an eye over it to check he hadn’t packed the tracks but not the train or whatever other missing bit might lead to upset later.

My five year old is already packed for our holiday in two weeks but keeps packing his teddy which means it has to be unpacked every bedtime 🙄

I’ve checked and thankfully it’s all toys. A bit random mix of them, but some sensible choices. I’ve given him a special new toy to be left at the home. I suspect DH never checks the toy bag lol

He chose well then. I wish I could say the same of my packing.

I hope that you all have a wonderful time.

MrsMillhouse · 19/07/2021 11:30

Thank you @StraightOutside. The site we stay at has had to close the restaurant and all entertainment etc due to track and trace. Think this is a taste of things to come over the next month or so

Mt dc are a fair bit older than that (10 and 8) and while they do their own packing I check they haven't forgotten anything vital. I think you'd be made not to, it is hard for dc to anticipate their needs in the same way as an adult.

MrsMillhouse I'm sorry that so much of your planned holiday is now inaccessible. I hope that you're able to have some fun in spite of it.

I can’t believe the voting is so evenly split! As if a 5 year old is going to quietly admonish themselves if they’ve packed a bag of crap 🤣🤣
It’ll become your problem, therefore it’s your responsibility!

I have just come back from the Maldives and only took my handbag after the last trip when I didn't empty my suitcase. I forgot my HRT (poor husband) beachy clothes and a nightie and my moisturizer and ended up buying stuff at the hotel shop. My husband has that habit of reorganizing the dishwasher I loaded and checking I have my pills and charger. Kind of getting why now 😂

MrsMillhouse · 19/07/2021 21:02

Well, it turns out the bad packer in the house is actually me. I’ve forgotten to pack pjs for DS!! Thankfully it’s roasting hot so he can sleep in his pant

ALWAYS check what your children pack in their bags, cases etc... there's nothing worse than being called over the airport tannoy to security as my young son's case had a ( toy) gun in it.
Bizarrely, he never played with it. It was a party present and he wasn't interested in it.

MrsMillhouse · 19/07/2021 21:44

@StraightOutside thanks! It’s beautiful weather and there are outdoor play areas and turns out the swimming is still open so we will still have a ball

Enjoy!

And yes, I would check. My kids once packed onions.

(They were playing shopping. Thankfully from a veg basket and not the freezer, otherwise we would have travelled with a bag of slowly defrosting prawns).
