Interview or school play

Just that really.

Name changed because I've spoken irl about this.

I applied for a secondment (i.e. a temporary position) I've got an interview but it's in the middle of DSs (reception) school play. He so excited about it and excited about me seeing it. The interview can't be moved, I've already asked.

I probably won't get the job as another person interviewing has experience of doing it already.

Other opportunities for the position will arise, but it could be 18months or more. DS will do another school play at Easter.

YABU - go to the interview
YANBU - Gp to the play.

@Porcupineintherough

What sort of shit employer cant be flexible about an interview time? How difficult would it be to move it by a few hours? That alone would make me think they werent seriously considering your application.
She already works for them so I guess she knows if they are decent or not!
Wjevtvha · 18/07/2021 20:26

I’d go to the play; if they’re refusing to move the interview then that’s not a good sign to me

Rhinothunder · 18/07/2021 20:27

100% interview

AlmostSummer21 · 18/07/2021 20:27

If they wanted you for the position, they'd move an interview time you can't make. If they're this inflexible now, do you really want the job?

Sally872 · 18/07/2021 20:30

Are you worried dc will be upset if you don't go? If so go to interview, dh is there dc will be fine. Very common that only one parent can attend school play or even grandparent instead.

If you personally don't want to miss out on the play that is a bit different. These things are lovely (and crowded and warm and boring in part), but there will be others so I would still go for interview.

Porcupineintherough · 18/07/2021 22:38

@Nohomemadecandles and they know her and they are still not willing to be flexible. Where I work it would be literally unthinkable to treat an internal candidate that way.

Our interviews are very set. Application, short list, interview. Interviews all on the same day, or two consecutive days if needed. It's department wide. We don't move interviews, ever, for anyone or any reason.

I'd go to the play. But I was the child whose mother never came to any play so I may be a bit biased!
(And I'm not saying you don't go to any plays...)

Simbacatisback · 19/07/2021 12:19

@UrAWizHarry

Pretty shitty that the interview can't be moved.
Not really- getting a panel together for multiple interviews is hard enough- trying to juggle someone at a different time even worse.
Youdiditanyway · 19/07/2021 12:21

Interview. His Dad is going so it isn’t as if no one will be there to watch, ask your DH to record it if that’s permitted. Your DS is in reception so you have years and years of school plays to go.

ChaToilLeam · 19/07/2021 12:23

Interview. DS has someone there and will just have to understand that both parents can’t be there every time. Lots of kids have parents who can’t come because of work or other commitments.
