If you get a call or multiple calls from an number you do not know

DO NOT RING IT BACK & DEFINITELY DONT BE ABUSIVE IF YOU DOConfused

I am being driven mad by calls from random strangers, who think I've called them, when I haven't. Particularly fecking upsetting when I'm disabled & currently laid up ill, so really could do without running to the phone. Can't unplug as I'm waiting on medical calls & have an elderly DF who has been very ill recently 🤦‍♀️

Scammers are hiding behind our phone number. Apparently it's called Spoofing (info in link) some callers refuse to believe this & are arguing with me Confused Fraud Action & our IP can do nothing. They said it won't last long, but it's now nearly a month & getting worse. 9 calls before 9.30 am today, 2 abusive Angry

& for the first time ever, if the DM or any other shitrag want to make a story of this to raise awareness, please do!! Grin

Just hang up on anyone being abusive.
Can your phone provider do anything? Presumably not as you've said your IP can't and they'll probably be the same company.

Have you contacted your network provider? 30 calls is an insane number, there must be something happening that needs sorting out.

I never call back if I’ve missed a call from an unknown number, if they need to get in touch they leave a message or send a text. So I do agree with you about that.

I hope whatever’s happening is sorted soon.

The network provider can't do anything other than giving you a new number.

Unfortunately there's not a lot you can do about spoofing other than to get a new number.

I've had this happen to me and I've returned calls to people whose numbers have been spoofed. Happily it only usually lasts about 24 hours before the scammers move on to using another number.

As a general rule I don't call an unknown number back unless I'm expecting a call, someone leaves me a message, voice mail, or calls more than once.

The TPS
Telephone Preference Service

Thanks everyone

The IP I mentioned in my OP is our internet provider. They can't do anything as it's random numbers calling us, can't even block as it's so many.

It has stopped & starts again. Today has been the worst, hence my posting.

Yeah, trust me I've put the phone down on the abusive ones, just gobsmacked that people will do that Confused. Most are nice & it isn't Thierry fault, so I'm nice & explain it's a scam. But so many calls today are driving me a bit 🤪

We are with TPS already. Unfortunately makes no difference when it comes to any kind of scammers

It's seems to be only office hours though, generally not after 6 & not weekends. But it's been a month on & off now 🥴 & really don't want to change our phone number, big hassle in general & timing bad due to a very Elderly DF at the other end of the country p, who won't cope with a number change & I can't get up to sort it out in his phone for him. 🤞🤞 it does stop properly soon.

It's happening all over UK and Ireland at the moment. I got one of those calls recently, and told a Garda friend of mine. He rang the number back and it was an elderly woman who hadn't a clue what was going on. All the calls are using spoofed numbers.
They seem to be changing numbers regularly, so hopefully yours won't be used much longer.

Itsnotmyjob · 16/07/2021 17:12

Sorry to hear this OP, it must be very frustrating and unpleasant.

You can get a phone/service that you can set up to just get direct calls from numbers in the address book, everything else goes into a queue - it still rings but at least you can reject the call. I got that after a spate of marketing calls.

midgemagneto · 16/07/2021 17:24

Your service provider could give you a new phone number

Or you could get a system to screen all incoming calls ... from people you know ring , else dump or send to answer phone
