Would you eat insects?

I am very much on the fence. On the one hand I’m really grossed out, but on the other hand I’ve been reading some of them have a lot of flavour (apparently boiled woodlouse tastes like shrimp, but who knows!).

I’m not planning on going forging in my garden anytime soon for anything beyond herbs and the odd flowers but I’m curious, would you?

YANBU - I would eat them
YABU - absolutely not

I would, and have, eaten quite a few but flavourwise, let's just say I see why people eat meat in preference if they can get it. Mopani worms are the only ones I'd actually want to eat again, the rest only out of necessity or politeness.

Nooooo way!!!
A moth flew into me last night and I nearly woke the kids screeching, bugs gross me out big time!
In my defence though this moth was massive!

DramaAlpaca · 14/07/2021 20:28

No! I can't even bear the thought of eating shellfish so insects are several steps too far.

georgarina · 14/07/2021 20:30

My Sainsburys sells packs of spicy grasshoppers. I've tried them but didn't like the taste and was a bit icked by the legs/feelers. High in protein apparently though.

BajanB · 14/07/2021 20:30

I would try them (well some of them) on the basis I eat prawns, mussels, scallops etc. If they were prepared in a way that disguised them a bit (chopped up, sliced, fried) I’d definitely try some. Some of the really chunky bugs that people say pop like a blister in your mouth - I’d throw up for sure . Or anything with a big juicy body like a spider. God knows how I can eat a king prawn but struggle with the idea of some insects.

HavelockVetinari · 14/07/2021 20:30

Locust flour is fine, it's high in protein, low in fat. I like it.

I'm not at all squeamish about eating insects, although I don't think I'd eat a cockroach unless it was impossible to identify, and I don't fancy eating (e.g.) deep fried arachnids (not insects obvs but similar in people's minds I think).

Caspianberg · 14/07/2021 20:32

Yes. Locally to use they are producing things from mealworms ie type of flour. The idea being it’s super high protein yet better environmentally.
Similar to ground almonds tbh. If you added a spoon of ground mealworms to various things you would never know it’s in there taste wise.
They even make chocolate with it in

FreezerBird · 14/07/2021 20:32

I had cricket cookies at the café of Dr Beynon's Bug Farm near St David's.

Texture was a bit different, but they were fine.

PussGirl · 14/07/2021 20:32

I would - I'm very unsqueamish about food.

Mind you the maggots I found in some French cheese I was eating yesterday were not ideal!

IveGotASongThatllGetOnYNerves · 14/07/2021 20:33

Not unless I was starving and had no other options.

FreeSpirits · 14/07/2021 20:33

If it was between life and death .. yes
For fun. . NO

DowntonCrabby · 14/07/2021 20:34

Yes I’d probably give it a go. You can already get crunchy crickets in Sainsbury’s apparently.

I read something, possibly Nat Geo suggesting humans will have to get protein from insects not too far in the future as a sustainability move.

ZingDramaQueenOfSheeba · 14/07/2021 20:34

not willingly but I'm sure I've eaten some by accident

and although not an insect I think I ate a tiny spider a few week's back. I brushed it off my shoulder and it fell on my pizza. I didn't see where...so I just ate my pizza 🤷‍♀️

Blessex · 14/07/2021 20:34

So weirdly no way as I eat prawns and lobster and oysters etc. But then if you asked me if I would eat an unfertilised animal eg an egg - if they wasn’t commonplace - I would say that was gross. Ps I love eggs !!!

Blessex · 14/07/2021 20:35

*werent

Cloudninenine · 14/07/2021 20:36

No, I’m a vegetarian. Not sure if I would if I wasn’t!

Jourdain11 · 14/07/2021 20:36

Noooooooo!

GammyLeg · 14/07/2021 20:37

Yes. I’ve eaten deep fried ants and they were pretty good. Would try more.

Interested to hear mealworm locust etc flour is becoming a thing - never heard of that.
