To call lost final a failure?

They made final. It's an expetional achievement. They've put up hell a lot of fight. I didn't expect footbal team to reach that far. It's not failure, they've done great.

Well italy could not beat them within 90 mins and extra time Safari, so they are obviously good enough, not just luck.

I think they did excellently, they came 2nd out if the whole of Europe! Stands them in good stead for next year!

They could do a 'Bobby Ewing getting out of the shower -- it was all a dream' moment.

Although of course that might mean that the entire season was a hallucination, and in fact England had failed to qualify for the tournament in the first place.

They lost, but did well to get so far. I don’t even like football but think they definitely are worthy of praise.

Yes they failed to win but they were not a failure , you dont get that far in any tournament if you are a failure . More to the point I am realy proud of the way ( both ) teams conducted themselves on the pitch with the exception of one shirt pulling and a a risky tackle they all played with respect and good nature .

The fans that broke in on the other hand are absolutely despicable and should be forced to watch the Hillsbourgh disaster and the heart-breaking aftermath .
I know the circumstances are different and due to the lack of fencing at Wembley it could not happen again ( thank god )but there still could of been crushes in other areas

In the euros and world cup there is one level of winning.
Is that why they also give out silver medals?

A second place in these tournaments feels like a complete loss because the team loses the game, but they also beat all the other teams before.

@Lweji they don’t care about those medals. Most players will take them straight off, just like England did last night after congratulating Italy! They didn’t want to be runners up.

I wouldn't call it a failure, they did amazingly well to get to the final.

They didn't on the day, of course.
Like I wrote, it feels like a huge loss.

I think in a final after extra time it should be first to score a goal not penalties. After each 10 minutes, change ends, and just keep going until a goal is scored. The guilt of the players who miss the penalties and also the goalkeeper who has let the penalties in must be immense even though it's not really their fault.

@PhillipPhillop that’s exactly what they used to do- golden goal. It wasn’t popular.

The team did far better than expected to even get to a final, it's taken 55 years since the last one.

That said, we had it there for the winning, and we didn't win. Tactics, which Southgate had got right all tournament, were totally wrong last night and as a result Italy won, which tbh was always going to be the outcome once it went to penalties. It's not the penalty takers fault, it's the fact we ended up in a penalty shootout which is always a shit end to a championship.

Penalties are always harsh, they are a far better team than in the Beckham years.
