Can you get food poisoning after spitting the food straight out?

The night before I made some tuna pasta I forgot to put it in the fridge , this morning i took a little bite into the pasta and it tasted foul so I spat it right out and rinsed my mouth and I also brushed my tongue.

Can you get food poisoning from this ... I know what's done is done now but so worried as I have a baby and I can't afford to be sick right now my stomach feels a little funny but don't know if it's all in my head 🤣🤣

I think you’d have to be really unlucky but I guess it is possible. Have a cuppa and get stuck into something for a bit and hopefully the funny feeling passes.

SchrodingersMat · 10/07/2021 17:24

Extremely unlikely in the scenario you’ve described OP, I wouldn’t worry.

girlmom21 · 10/07/2021 17:25

You're probably just feeling queasy because it tasted rank. I can't imagine you'd have ingested enough to be poorly from it.

Dollywilde · 10/07/2021 17:26

So unlikely OP, if anything you’ll more likely be sick from stressing!

If it’s any consolation I worried sick (ha!) about this sort of stuff when I was pregnant and it overhanged into the postpartum time, did you suffer with any anxiety around food when pregnant? If you did it’s hard to step back but really, you’ll be fine and when you are ill with the baby to look after (it happens!) you will cope. I’m pretty sure it’s what they invented CBeebies for Grin

I wouldn’t have thought so

Strugglingtodomybest · 10/07/2021 17:26

No, I would say the funny feeling in your stomach is caused by the anxiety you're feeling.

MouldyPotato · 10/07/2021 17:28

Very unlikely
Maybe if it was chicken or someone had coughed on it.

worktrip · 10/07/2021 17:38

No, you need to swallow the food and then in fairly significant quantities.

CorvusPurpureus · 10/07/2021 17:55

I think you'd need to have swallowed it. Also, there's a difference between immediately chucking up something nasty & actual food poisoning?

I made myself ill once on dodgy prawn salad brought to a BBQ by a family member (not noted for his food hygiene). It tasted distinctly 'off' but I'd already greedily swallowed a mouthful before that registered.

I quietly binned it before anyone else ate it...I was sick shortly afterwards, then fine.

Whereas for yer actual campylobacter food poisoning, I was properly ill for days. Very different experience!

I'd not worry too much unless you're vomiting explosively or doubled over with cramps.

Skysblue · 10/07/2021 19:05

No. Some people actually test if mushrooms are poisonous by chewing them, then spitting them out if tongue tingles (crazy I know). But those people don’t seem to get sick. You’ll be fine. The queasiness is just your body’s reaction to being presented with unacceptable food.

Youdiditanyway · 10/07/2021 19:07

Doubt it, you need to ingest it really for it to cause an issue and usually a significant amount.

Mammyloveswine · 10/07/2021 23:59

I've had food poisoning once..when I was pregnant.. I ate rubbery chicken stupidly.. I had a week off work, couldn't leave the house abs still wasn't right for a good few weeks..

You'll be fine!

Hellocatshome · 11/07/2021 00:00

Extremely unlikely.
