AIBU Not to tip Just Eat driver?

DukeofEarlGrey · 10/07/2021 12:31

I’m open to whether or not AIBU here.

During lockdown I started using Deliveroo and Just Eat a bit, usually for the occasional lunch or dinner at about £10-£15. On Deliveroo there is a delivery charge and then an additional option to add a driver’s tip and I would always add an extra 10-15% to the initial delivery fee.

I then broke the Deliveroo app (don’t ask me how) and switched to Just Eat. Just Eat doesn’t have an option to add the delivery tip and I’ve never been sure of the etiquette for cash tipping the driver. I occasionally do it but more often than not either forget or don’t have cash at home. It’s never seemed to offend the driver and I’ve never given it much thought.

Anyway, I just ordered lunch from Just Eat and when I thanked the driver, I think he said ‘thanks for the tip’. I didn’t give him a cash tip so assume this was sarcasm and now wonder if I am being really harsh in not tipping.

I get that it is technically optional, but am curious to know what others do and whether there is an established etiquette, so...

YABU - They should be tipped, bad form not to
YANBU - It’s a nice-to-have

I am in the UK, by the way.

I'm in the UK and I think it's tight not to tip.

We always tip delivery drivers, have a stash of £1 and £2 coins for this purpose.

At the height of covid when there was such a fuss about contact-free deliveries we left the coins on the step after one driver didn't want to get in trouble for taking it from my hand.

MsHedgehog · 10/07/2021 13:25

If you can afford a take away, you can afford a couple of extra pounds as a tip.

Heyha · 10/07/2021 13:26

I don't tip on the regular but we do have our favourite places and it's generally the same drivers, the three of them got a Christmas card with a tenner in it this year from us.

Rainallnight · 10/07/2021 13:26

I always, always tip Deliveroo and Uber Eats drivers because I think they’re shit, insecure jobs and I’m lucky to be able to afford it. Many of them have thanked me very sincerely and said hardly anyone does.

I wouldn’t tip if it needed cash as I hardly ever have any.

Heyha · 10/07/2021 13:27

Should add we only use Just Eat, don't know if that makes any difference.

PerveenMistry · 10/07/2021 13:27

@MsHedgehog

If you can afford a take away, you can afford a couple of extra pounds as a tip.

That's my philosophy. I'm fortunate and it behooves me to extend that to others who have harder lives.

@sunshineandshowers21

i never tip delivery drivers. especially when ordering on an app and the delivery charge is always about a fiver plus add on service charges. i hate ordering on uber eats when it prompts you to tip the driver before they’ve even brought the food!
Yeh, I hate this on Uber Eats. I made the mistake of tipping a driver before my.food arrived once, just for them to throw my food on my doorstep. Never again.
MrsArchchancellorRidcully · 10/07/2021 13:31

I've never tipped. Never would.

burnoutbabe · 10/07/2021 13:33

I always add £1 onto the order as the tip.

HunterHearstHelmsley · 10/07/2021 13:36

I've never tipped a delivery driver. It's usually around £3.99 for delivery as it is.

I very rarely tip anyway, this isn't America where people are getting paid less than minimum wage with an expectation of tips.

Happy36 · 10/07/2021 13:38

I had surgery recently and ordered takeaway food when convalescing. Driver had to park or lock his bike (not always easy where l live), come into my building with 2 codes, and up 3 flights of stairs without lift. So I tipped 2€ (order value around 12€).

I don't order takeaway often but when I do I wait outside and just take it as the driver pulls up so I don't feel I need to tip. Never had a rude comment (to my face or within my hearing).

whynotwhatknot · 10/07/2021 13:44

i dont tip when i order through the major apps

they already get a delivery fee plus have to pay a service charge-its nothing like america where they dot get a proer minimum wage

Myoldtable · 10/07/2021 13:52

I usually tip £1 for a food delivery, keep some coins always handy.
I feel sorry for them turning out in the evening/night trying to find the address, they don’t get paid much

MsHedgehog · 10/07/2021 13:59

@insancerre

I don’t tip delivery drivers I already pay extra for delivery
That delivery fee goes to the company (ie Uber eats, just eat, etc etc). You’re not actually tipping the driver...

Do you know how the gig economy works? They don’t actually get paid the minimum wage at all?
OnWhatPlanet · 10/07/2021 14:01

We mostly use local places and I know the drivers don't get the full delivery charge and I know this because I have family who drive for some local pizza places.

I always tip. If somethings costs £13 I'll hand £15 and tell them to keep the change.

I don't know what percentage the actual driver gets from companies like Uber Eats but I do still tip those too.

Yes, it is like America actually. Deliveroo and UberEats drivers don’t get minimum wage.

Was this during covid? If so, they are meant to leave it on your doorstep to avoid the risk of covid.

girlmom21 · 10/07/2021 14:13

@MsHedgehog just eat drivers get paid a proper wage

MsHedgehog · 10/07/2021 14:16

@girlmom21 I referred to only Deliveroo and UberEats for a reason...

Exactly.
ChocolateCakeYum · 10/07/2021 14:22

Nope, never tipped a delivery driver.

DifferentHair · 10/07/2021 14:24

I do, and I tip more if it's raining or very cold.

As above, if I can afford food delivery I can afford a tip. It's a hard and poorly remunerated job.

CastawayQueen · 10/07/2021 14:26

I tip depending on my mood. Don’t think it’s necessary

I see tipping started to become a thing (in restaurants) and am very much against the principle. Just another way to shaft workers and customers. Preventing it from taking root is best and I say it as a former zero hour contract event waitress

EveryFlightBeginsWithAFall · 10/07/2021 14:28

The last time I used uber eats was the cheese cake shop and they charged me £6 Delivery.
