I have made a new friend who has relocated from Kenya to the UK. She is a kind, warm and lovely woman but just recently seemed depressed and struggling- how can I best help?

Her husband relics for work (nhs) she does some volunteer work. Her husband works long hours she has a 6 year old who is struggling at school.

I would love to hear from someone who had do this kind of relocation and what helped you find your feet. I know she is finding it hard.

First off, it’s really nice of you to care! I don’t have any specific advice but go you!

I relocated to a country where I didn’t know the language and culture was totally different inc school and ds struggled in school.
I learnt that if my child is unhappy then as a mother you are unhappy too.
Can you help her with the issues her son is having at school.
Sometimes what I needed was a listening ear and something fun to do. Is she connected to anyone else in the local Kenyan community? That can help too.
You are a very kind friend. As someone who has experienced this kind of help she will never forget it!

I have moved to many different countries, some with my children, some without. I found the UK hard (I moved to a small city) as many people had lived there a long time and already had their friend groups so it wasn't easy to break in. Meeting parents at school helped, as did looking for like minded people on Meetup or Facebook groups. Perhaps also joining a church or choir or other group where she meets other people. It is lovely that she has you to help.

PS, where are you based? Living near London, her embassy might have functions to attend where she can connect with other Kenyan expats.
