To report a vehicle with no tax and MOT...

I mean, I know the answer really, but something is stopping me. It's a small van that's started parking in a hidden area close to where I live. I looked it up, and it hasn't had any tax or MOT for nearly a year.

But then I think... maybe it's someone working to just make ends meet, and bby taking their van, it could trigger something awful?

But of course, why shouldn't they pay for it and keep others safe when we all have to!

Just tell me though - it IS anonymous isn't it....

Just do it, we all need to pay

Theforest · 07/07/2021 14:55

I would report it. It's potentially unsafe to be on road

Whitney168 · 07/07/2021 14:56

Given that if they have no tax or MOT, it's likely they don't have insurance either, I'd definitely report it. Why on earth should people be able to travel on roads and put people at risk of uninsured losses?

PennyDreadful66 · 07/07/2021 14:57

It's a difficult one, I had a van parked on my drive with no MOT or insurance or anything but that's because it was my dad's van who died and I was sorting everything else out before getting rid of it so idk, we all need to pay but idk, I'd probably mind my own business as I don't know their circumstances, if they are driving round then that's a different matter.

Pazuzu · 07/07/2021 14:57

If it's not taxed/MOT'd it won't be insured. Report it anonymously via

forms.dft.gov.uk/report-an-untaxed-vehicle/

Could it trigger something worse? Yes, for the other party should they get into an accident.

ChainJane · 07/07/2021 14:57

YANBU. If it's not taxed and MoT'd then any insurance they have is invalid too. Report them and get them taken off the road before they have a collision with someone.

BTW where can you check if a car is taxed and MoT'd?

If it's parked on your drive you don't need an MOT or insurance.

But that's on private land and not moving, not the same thing at all. Hopefully you also had it SORN'd to save some money.
PennyDreadful66 · 07/07/2021 15:01

Oh, I thought OP meant the van has been parked in a hidden place and not moved which I know isnt okay but thought it could be something like my circumstance but if it's being driven then definitely report it.

Excitedannie · 07/07/2021 15:02

this is definitely public land, and I know it's still being used for work purposes. Yep, you've made my mind up - I'm doing it. I also saw him empty the ashtray all over the road the other day, so I'll do it for that if nothing else!!

@ChainJane - it's on the GOV website - just google "check whether a vehicle is taxed"

OP posts:
Justkeeprollingalong · 07/07/2021 15:02

@ChainJane there's a checker on the DVLA website: you just enter the registration number of the vehicle.

OP, definitely report it.

superstar84 · 07/07/2021 15:11

The local council seems to get these vehicles sorted much quicker than the dvla

You'll be able to log it online, easier with the registration number and a photo if you can get one discretely

We had one left right outside our gate, we couldn't get the wheelie bin out they had parked right up to it to avoid being on the road! Angry

thereisonlyoneofme · 07/07/2021 15:15

Im afraid I did this, I knew whose car it was as it was obviously parked elsewhere to avoid being clamped. No tax or MOT, which OK not good but it was the no insurance that made me do it because that would impact on some poor s*d that happened to be in an accident with them

thereisonlyoneofme · 07/07/2021 15:16

chainlane you do need insurance if its parked on your drive even if its SORNed,

Wrong.
Mad4Max1 · 07/07/2021 15:33

Vehicles over a certain age are tax & MOT exempt

Think it is 40 years

But need insurance

Passmealargewine · 07/07/2021 15:37

I would report.
I know of someone who's been driving around with no tax for about 3 years, ive reported it more than once & it doesn't seem that anything has been done about it unfortunately

motogogo · 07/07/2021 15:45

If it's on public land but not a road then it's the owners of the land to write to not highways

Hallyup6 · 07/07/2021 16:10

You can report anonymously but don't be surprised if nothing happens. I've been reporting a guy for years. He's a mechanic and 'borrows' cars that he's working on to drive to and from work, and drop his kids off at school. He has a different vehicle every few days; none are taxed but often he'll make sure they've got a valid mot. I've given his name and address but he just continues to drive the next untaxed vehicle with seemingly no repercussions.
