I think my accounts are being hacked!!

This morning I got a text from my credit card company with a verification code for a purchase of over £100 to a company I have never heard of. That account hasn't been used in awhile and has a zero balance. I phoned them and they confirmed a transaction was pending and said they will unauthorised it. They also said another transaction had been made last week to a different company but it was for £0.00??? They cancelled and blocked my card and are sending out a new one.

I thought that was sorted, then this evening I got a text from my mobile company saying sorry we got disconnected, if I want to chat further I can do so on their app etc!!

By the time I got DC to bed it was too late to call so I requested to speak to an advisor using their Live chat.

Eventually I got out of the advisor that someone posing as me requested a new sim card claiming I had lost mine!! They apparently filled in an online form? No idea how that works! But they assured me they have now unauthorised the new sim and I should keep using my current one. I changed all my passwords, memorable info etc.

I can't change my login details for my credit card account because my card has been blocked so I'm going to phone them first thing in the morning to sort that.

But wtf!?! I'm totally freaked out by this! I once had my fb hacked years ago but never anything important such as banking accounts. Is there anything I should be doing that I haven't already? I recently changed my personal banking log in details and email account with super strong passwords etc, should I be changing them again? Do I need to report it to the police or just leave it with the credit card and phone company to keep an eye on?

Sorry for the long post, thankyou for reading!

You absolutely need to change all your passwords again. Change your e-mail address password as well, and make sure you change your passwords for everything you use even if it appears these accounts haven't been compromised. You can report the dodgy transactions to Action Fraud, although I doubt much would come of it anyway.

Do a very thorough check for viruses on your devices, as people can gain your passwords to stuff by using spyware etc.

Go on haveibeenpwned.com and check if your e-mail or phone number has been in a data breach.

Another thing that is useful is ClearScore which I use for checking my credit file, they also scan the dark web to see if your passwords have been put up for sale.

You can also check device/IP history on some accounts to see where activity may be coming.

Thankyou for replying and for so much useful info! I'll run a scan on my laptop, do you know how I can do this on my phone? I'm not very tech savvy.

I have ClearScore already and everything that flagged as being linked to my email was random stuff set up with no personal info or accounts I've never heard of before, 2 were dating sites!! But I've never signed up to a dating site ever Confused

I'll check out haveibeenpawned.com. Thankyou again for your help and advice. I feel so creeped out this is happening!

I'm not sure about iphone if you have one, but I have android and there's some free virus scanning apps available on the Play Store.

And that's really worrying about the results on ClearScore regarding all those accounts! Have you considered getting a whole new email address and transferring your accounts to that email address, or is that not possible for you at the moment?

I hope you can get this all sorted out asap. I was the victim of fraud on PayPal once, had about 2k stolen from me! But I had never shared my details with anyone, never fallen for a phishing scam, and use strong passwords etc, to this day I don't know how it happened. I did get my money back though (no thanks to PayPal, they were terrible, it was my bank that sorted it).

Oh wow I'm so sorry you went through that!! I'm stressed and I appear to only have a near miss so I cant imagine how stressful that mustve been having so much money stolen.

I've had the same email forever but yeh, now considering transferring all my accounts to a new one. I'm rubbish with tech so DP is going to help me sort that plus 'cleanse' all my accounts, whatever that means!

I know, it appears the main breaches shown on clear score were through a mind mapping software account I set up years ago and a media sharing account. Luckily both had no personal info (at least I dont think so) and one off passwords for both.

Like you I have no idea how they hacked my credit card. I have the card here, no one has access to it, I never carry it around with me and barely ever use the online account because I just make a purchase and pay it off. So no idea how they managed to make an actual purchase without the 3 digit code on the back!! And I have McAfee on my laptop where I make the occasional purchase to companies I know, I'm not big on online purchasing.

My DB works with IT so I left a message for him to contact me so he can check if I have Spyware or anything like that.

Thanks again for your advice, i did discover that i haven't been signed up to a dating app, the breach was apparently fabricated lol, found out through haveibeenpawned.com Grin
