What did you do to stop drinking?

I've quite alcohol. I feel SO much better. But I wanted to join 'like minded' people.

I'm reading a ton of 'quit lit' which is helping immeasurably.
There's a lot of Facebook groups but the few ive tried out there seems to be many posts along the lines of
"Day 1 again..."

"Back again, fell off the wagon last night..."

And I find it really demotivating.

I know there was a long standing thread on MN somewhere years ago, but I've no idea what it's called or where it is.

What did you do when you quite alcohol?

373 days AF for me! I read the unexpected joy of being sober, started doing yoga again & eating healthier.

This is a lovely thread, you are asked to only post if you are AF so there isn’t any posting about falling off the wagon & they are a lovely supportive bunch, I can just never keep up with everyone as it’s a busy thread.

I gave up over a year ago, I feel so much better for it too.

I haven’t had a drink since becoming pregnant in autumn 2019. I’m keen not to start drinking again once I stop breastfeeding as prior to getting pregnant my units had been creeping up. In a normal week I was drinking two or so bottles of wine ( half a bottle most nights) plus the odd spirit with mixer ( more when I went out).
How to stay off the booze? Well honestly, I do still get the occasional craving for something especially on hot summer evening when I fancy a g&t but I’ve found running (especially to music) gives me a similar buzz to alcohol which lasts an hour or two after I’ve run. The benefit of this is no hangovers. My hangovers post 40 were simply horrific!

Following as I’m looking for something similar and it’s been 3.5 years for me, still searching for my ‘sober tribe’ - found the exact same thing with the groups, and never found anything where it felt like the other members were on the same wavelength!

Will join the thread here too. Congrats on your sobriety!

  • has got many lovely people, I’m sure you’d be welcome.

I know what you mean, I used to dip into those groups now and again if I was wavering and needed a reminder of how crappy I felt! I stopped needing groups as this is just me now, but I follow a lot of sober accounts on Instagram for inspiration and I have just found a non-drinker MeetUp group and I'm going to join their meet up soon in person.

I feel the same - on my final time of quitting I didn’t waver at all (I did many times before!) so didn’t find the groups as helpful. Now I’d just like to find some like minded people who like me, have been living a happily sober life for a few years - I don’t know a single non drinker in real life which is sad really! Just finished Catherine gray’s new book, Sunshine Warm Sober and it was such a lovely reminder of why I chose this life that I’d love to share it with others who’ve walked the same road!

10 day at home medical detox. Don't be me people. Stop before you get there!!!

I'm coming up 2 years sober in September and have never been happier, never looked back.
