To have the lights dim at night

Once we've had dinner, got DD in bed and settled down to relax I can't stand having the main lights on. It's so much more relaxing to just have the lamps on (especially as you can't see the pile of clothes in the corner that needs putting away 😂). DH would have them on full blast until bedtime if he got his way.

I'm currently coveting a salt lamp for that lovely warm glow.

I thought everyone was the same! Grin

Oh I hate dim lighting, you can't see to do anything, can't even find things. I think it works if you are inactive and only watch TV etc, if you're active and want to be doing something then it doesn't.

Lonecatwithkitten · 04/07/2021 07:10

We have a slightly different disagreement. DH would have them all off and just candies and I like lamps on, but neither of us want main light on.
As I point to DH he falls asleep so it makes no difference to him.

warmfluffytowels · 04/07/2021 07:54

YANBU!

We have warm white fairy lights around the living room for evenings plus there's always a wax burner lit too. I love how cosy it is Smile

Longestfewdaysupcoming · 04/07/2021 07:55

I hate dim lights. I like the big light and the lamp on beside me.

MrsSugar · 04/07/2021 07:56

I’m with you ! Tbh I hate big bright lights at any time. I love salt lamps and soft lighting ! My husband calls me a vampire and says I live in the dark lol

maddiemookins16mum · 04/07/2021 07:57

We rarely have the big light on in the sitting room of a night, just the small lamps, the TV and a candle or two.

NautaOcts · 04/07/2021 07:58

Frustrates me so much when DH sits there with the overhead light on, it’s so harsh! Love lamp lighting, doesn’t even have to be that dim but so much softer

DappledThings · 04/07/2021 07:58

I hate lamps. They are fiddly and annoying. Big light all the way for me. I only own two lamps which are either side of our bed and that's only because otherwise I'd have to get out of bed after reading to turn the light off.

Mumdiva99 · 04/07/2021 07:59

Big light all the way. It's one of the things dh and I agree on.

We have those smart bulbs so I just tell Google to turn on whatever lights I want on and it does it. I do live in fear of accidentally turning on something in DD's room though.

I do wonder why some people have a 'big light' in rooms where they've no intention of turning them on.

So if I had that I could turn the bedroom light off without getting out of bed. So I could do away with lamps and just have nice bright proper lights all the time. That does sound good

Bluntness100 · 04/07/2021 08:04

I agree, can’t understand big lights in the evening, they are so harsh. We have side wall lights on, a table lamp and some uplighters, makes the room warm, and you can still see what you’re doing, but just not harsh and bright,

I’ve one friend who has no lights on in the evening, just some fairy lights round the fire place, it’s not far off sitting in the pitch black and I don’t like that, we can hardly see each other.

Um the day doesn’t jist consist of the evening, there is morning and day time too 😂

Because they came with the house. Because removing them and the electrics that go with them is a huge amount of hassle.

Because it's not hurting anyone at all to just not turn on the switch?

awaywiththefae · 04/07/2021 08:07

I can’t remember the last time I put the big light on. We only ever really use the lamps.

whiteroseredrose · 04/07/2021 08:13

We have the opposite. DH likes lamps, then lights off to watch TV.

That gives me eyestrain, I like the lights to be bright. Big light on and the lamps to brighten every corner.

We compromise to an extent. But usually who gets there first wins!

NannyR · 04/07/2021 08:13

I never use the "big light", I have several lamps and fairy lights that are all plugged into remote control sockets. I can switch them all on by pushing one button.

BumbleMug · 04/07/2021 08:21

Big light after dark is only for finding something lost. Too bright otherwise.

I often sit in darkness with just the TV lighting the room. But otherwise one or two soft lamps is all that’s on at night.

This ^^ Dim lighting only for watching TV.

I have terrible eyesight and need good lighting for reading, sewing or just pottering about.

I also find dim lighting depressing.

Theoldcuriosityshop · 04/07/2021 09:10

I don't think I've ever had the big light on.

4PawsGood · 04/07/2021 09:13

Why not compromise and have the lamps on, but a bit brighter?
Definitely no big light on in the evening though.

LolaO · 04/07/2021 09:14

My eyesight is not amazing and DH wanting just the lamps on at night drives me insane. I can’t see properly, for me lamp light is not enough to read by, it’s infuriating. We have main lovely clear lights for a reason...

Could you get some more lamps though? Or one that illuminates your seat a bit more? It’s not just the brightness of the light, with the big light, it’s the quality. It would really upset me to have to have the big light on in a room.
