Hi all! Sorry if this ends up long.

A few times I have added some new - stuff I had forgot to send back over lockdown - school uniform onto onto local selling pages. It goes onto market place too!

A while ago I added some uniform onto fb and a guy messaged me asking where I was, my address etc and he wanted to buy the uniform for his sister - normal right! It then gets weird. I didn't give him my address at that point as something didn't seem right. He said he lived an hour away from my area and coming from bus. It seemed bizarre to travel so far for some uniform when you can buy it so cheap in supermarkets right?? He was asking questions about the uniform and material etc. It didn't seem right so I didn't reply again as didn't feel comfortable giving my address out and I didn't hear back again which is good. I totally forgot about it.

A few months down the line I added something else and again the same guy messaged me again with the same story of his sister and he was buying it to help his mum. Maybe he's genuinely trying to help but I feel an hour is a long way to travel for some uniform.

He then starts asking weird questions about washing it first etc and the fit. Asking if I can wash it all for him. new stuff with tags on so I wasn't willing to do this. He can wash himself! If it had been worn by my children I'd understand.

Maybe the guy has learning difficulties and didn't anticipate how far away I lived from him. Maybe he was just trying to help.

I just feel it's just a bit odd. I had a quick nose on his profile. He appears to be an adult but maybe young for his age. No signs of a sister but who knows.

I've added some uniform on again so I've looked back on old messages and blocked him.

I'm Not sure what the point of this post is tbh. I just found it a little bit odd. Would you?! He wasn't persistent as such and when I stopped replying he did too so maybe innocent! But just a little damn weird.

I'd like to think he was just trying to help his mum out.

But I added different things and even the boy aimed uniform I put on with a different size was for his sister...

I agree, that does sound odd.

It's odd. Another forum I use had an issue where a man kept PMming members wanting to get advice on dresses "for his sister", but then as they gave him a couple of ideas or whatever he'd start asking about how soft the fabric felt against one's thighs. When it was revealed by one poster, multiple others shared that they'd also had creepy dress and clothing related messages.

The guy's a skeevy old creep, too embarrassed to buy uniform from a shop because he's guilty of something untoward.

I had this on Gumtree. Two different men with a similar script.
I don't know what the reason/scam is, but it was exactly as you describe and very, very odd.
The questions were strange and it really put me on edge.
When I got the second messages from a different man, but same sort of deal, I was like wtf.

There must be something to it, but I can't figure out what.
I assumed initially that English wasn't their first language, so let some things slide, but it became apparent they were just weirdos.

I had something on Facebook when I looked for a gardener I found one who said he would do it but when he came to mine It turned out he had traveled over an hour by public transport and it wouldn’t have even been worth the amount I had paid him (I assumed he was local) he continued to text and harass me after so yeh there are weirdos out there

MorriseysGladioli · 03/07/2021 17:48

It sounds as if he enjoys talking about school uniform.
There are some weird fetishes around.

Naunet · 03/07/2021 18:04

Sounds like a perv to me, they aren’t uncommon sadly!

vincettenoir · 03/07/2021 22:58

I think you were right to trust your instincts. Maybe he was genuine but even if that’s the case you have a nothing to feel bad about. As you say he can get the same stuff elsewhere.

TreeSmuggler · 03/07/2021 23:10

Who knows but you were right to block. If something feel quite right on selling sites I ignore/block/say it's sold - not worth the hassle.

Iwantamarshmallowman · 03/07/2021 23:59

I don't sell on market place anymore becuase of this type of thing.
The worst one is shoes. The foot fetish weirdos always read from the same script and i was really freaked out when i got a dodgy message about 6 y/o dds wellys.
