Holidays for celebrations?! Getting a bit much!

Am I the only one that’s baffled by this culture of going abroad for every celebration?! Birthdays/hens/stags etc?! 🤔 I’ve been invited to 3 so far for 2022! I understand people looking forward to being able to travel but do we need to do expensive celebrations for everything?!

Have just been invited to another for a friends birthday next year. 16 people invited - a lot of whom don’t know each other (4 school friends, 1 from old job, 1 childhood friend, 2 new mum friends etc).
Plans are for 1 week during school holidays, B&B, 4 people to a room to “keep costs down”...£710pp 🙄😐
Add in the rest of your meals, drinks, activities etc and it’s going to end up silly money! Then there’s the childcare etc to consider. 11 of the 16 have children.

I’ve politely declined. But I can’t be the only one that would never expect people to spend that money to celebrate my birthday?!😳

It's pretty selfish especially if their dh have to take annual leave to look after dc and it eats into family funds or a family holiday. Very expensive for what it is.

I’ve been invited to two weddings abroad which I went to but that’s it, no other invites.
