How does airdrop work on iPhone

Posting in here for traffic, how does airdrop work on a iPhone. I have only ever used it to send from my iPhone to mac but think I might have sent to someone by mistake.
Is there any way to check if it has sent to someone?

Yes it normally says sent under the icon after it has been sent.

@cinammonbuns I pressed one of my contacts by mistake and the blue circle started going around as if it was sending, i shut my phone down as quick as possible so hoping it didn't send.

For airdrop to work both devices need to have WiFi and Bluetooth on and need to be within 30ft of each other… so unless the accident was close … it won’t have worked

@Sunshinedaisymeadowsxx it was the next to airdrop where it shows up as people who i have messaged recently i hit one of them by mistake
