To snack during zoom meetings?

Every day I have to log onto a meeting which is largely not applicable to me. We have a camera on, microphone off culture which I am fine with. However this interminable meeting coincides with my snack time so I’m often having my mid morning snack while listening / multitasking.

DD gets me up at 5:30am so I definitely need morning snacks to make it to lunch. Nobody else ever eats in meetings though so I just wondered whether I’m breaking the etiquette.

AIBU to snack?

YABU: control yourself, woman, and stop eating ion screen, nobody wants to see this

YANBU: nobody cares what you’re doing if you’re just a lurker, munch away.

How long is the meeting? Can't you change your snack time?

PinkPlantCase · 02/07/2021 09:47

Internal meeting I would snack, external I wouldn’t.

Flowerlane · 02/07/2021 09:47

Do adults have a snack time? Have I been missing out on snack time as a adult for all these years?Grin

Shoppingwithmother · 02/07/2021 09:47

No I think it’s rude. A cup of tea is ok but not eating. I also think it’s weird for adults to have a “snack time”

1940s · 02/07/2021 09:47

What's the snack?

Sirzy · 02/07/2021 09:48

Other people don’t want to sit and watch you eat!

tearsandtiaras · 02/07/2021 09:49

what is the snack?

JustKeepSw1mming · 02/07/2021 09:49

Pause your video? No one will notice if it's for a minute or so while you take a mouthful...

Disfordarkchocolate · 02/07/2021 09:50

I leave a camera on for drinks but switch it off for a couple of minutes if I need a snack. Unless it's a small team no-one will notice.

TolkiensFallow · 02/07/2021 09:50

If you’re using video then the etiquette is not to eat.

starrynight21 · 02/07/2021 09:51

YABU - it's rude to eat when you're on screen. Surely you can have "snack time" outside of your Zoom meetings ?

StarryNight468 · 02/07/2021 09:51

I agree with internal snacking, external not snacking unless they really won't know. I wouldn't have the mic on whilst eating though!

LemonMuffins · 02/07/2021 09:51

Unless it's a 3 hour meeting, just move your snack time or follow the same protocol you would for a loo break and excuse yourself for 2 minutes. Don't stuff your face on camera.

Wankerchief · 02/07/2021 09:51

Umm I start work at 5am and get a lunch break at 12:30…. You can make it through without wilting away.
Would you eat in the meeting room if you were in the office?

Dishwashersaurous · 02/07/2021 09:52

Umm. Sorry not good, unless you can turn your camera off

CMOTDibbler · 02/07/2021 09:53

No food on camera.

SengaMac · 02/07/2021 09:54

This

Would you eat in the meeting room if you were in the office?

SnarkyBag · 02/07/2021 09:54

If you leave the sound on then very unreasonable! But yeah you’re a grown up you don’t need a set “snack time” just have something before the meeting starts and have some water to drink during the meeting.

Shoxfordian · 02/07/2021 09:55

If you don’t have your camera on and you can swallow quickly if asked a question then it’s fine but probably best to change your snack time

daisypond · 02/07/2021 09:55

No, you shouldn’t eat in meetings if you have a camera on, and even if it’s just audio I’d be really careful so that no one can hear you. You wouldn’t do that if it was an in-person meeting, would you? I also think the idea of snacks is a bit odd in itself.

FAQs · 02/07/2021 09:56

Our team meetings we do. It’s quite informal and chilled so no one cares, a head office meeting I wouldn’t.

BewareTheBeardedDragon · 02/07/2021 09:57

Where I used to work it was totally acceptable to bring snacks to internal meetings, loads of people did it. However if it's not the culture where you work, and if you're the only one doing it then it sounds like that may be the case, you probably shouldn't. How long is the meeting - surely you can nudge your snack time to either just before or just after?

NoSquirrels · 02/07/2021 09:58

Honestly, I just couldn’t do it. Even if I was starving.

Eat before the meeting starts. Or point out that your presence at this meeting isn’t really required ion a regular basis and please could you just be included in the minutes and you’ll follow up on anything specific.

wheresmymojo · 02/07/2021 09:59

It depends what it is - a biscuit with your cup of tea, fine.

A scotch egg or something would be a bit weird.

niceupthedance · 02/07/2021 09:59

Snack before the meeting ?

I regularly have lunch at 11 as I get up early but also have meetings between 11-1
