AIBU to buy new bedding

Peace43 · 01/07/2021 11:19

When I moved into my new place post divorce I bought new duvet covers in pretty colours. It’s 2 years on and one of my new sets went bobbly, one faded but I still love number 3. Is it unreasonable to buy more? My husband would have had a fit as there’s nothing really wrong with what I’ve got. Mostly I fancy a change. I have the money but I still find it really hard to know what spending is reasonable.

Why does your ex husband have a say in what makes you happy?! If you can afford it and it gives you happiness then go for it.

DeathStare · 01/07/2021 11:28

If it makes you happy and you can afford it then get it. Different people handle money differently. As long as you can afford what you buy there are no absolute rights and wrongs. Stop thinking about what your ex would do and have confidence in your own decisions.

merryhouse · 01/07/2021 11:28

Would it be unreasonable to buy a cake? a pint of beer? a cinema ticket?

Your ex would have thought it wrong because the purchase wouldn't have increased his enjoyment at all (and possibly - not enough info to pronounce definitively - because it would have increased yours).

It's not a necessary purchase, but it will marginally increase your level of satisfaction with the world. All you have to decide is whether that marginal increase is worth the £25 or so you'll be spending. And it's entirely your decision.

Honey. I have no doubt that you have in one way or another struggled to get where you are today, be it with time, money and/or self esteeme.
Take a look around you. You have done that. You are a much stronger person than you were. You have achieved this through your hard work and you should feel extremely proud of yourself.

You have the money and if you want new bedding then have it.
It is your choice and no ones business except yours.
Hope you find something lovely and again, WELL DONE 💐

PurpleyBlue · 01/07/2021 11:52

It's completely up to you! Great isn't it! If you wanted you could buy new bedding every year. For what it's worth I've just bought some new stuff after 2 years as I hated the colour of the old stuff.

JudgeRindersMinder · 01/07/2021 11:54

Yanbu to want to replace it and you can afford it. 100% cotton doesn’t go bobbly so steer clear of anything “easy care” or poly cotton.

JudgeRindersMinder · 01/07/2021 11:55

By the way I go lovely 100% cotton king size bed linen for £30 from Asda of all places! I’d have been happy to spend up to £150 but the £30 was what I liked best!

justthecat · 01/07/2021 11:55

Get shopping I’ve just bought two new duvet covers in the Dunelm sale online

Peace43 · 01/07/2021 12:00

Thanks all. I knew the answer really but it helps to hear it. Money isn’t an issue but it’s still a struggle not to hear my exes voice (or his huffy sigh) in my head when I spend entirely on myself.

No poly cotton, got it!

Listen - every time you hear his huffy, small man little voice - do the thing that made him huff - it's a good thing - because he sounds like a twat and he'd only huff if you where doing something nice for you . OP you are allowed to treat yourself and have nice things - if anything it's a reward for putting up with his shit. Enjoying making him huff and doing it anyway!

PurpleyBlue · 01/07/2021 12:17

It takes a while for the huffy voice to leave. Enjoy your bedding!

Fairyliz · 01/07/2021 12:26

Blimey if you said you couldn’t afford the electricity bill I would be advising you to stick to old bedding.
But you can afford new bedding and you want it, so go and get some bugger what anyone else thinks!

motogogo · 01/07/2021 12:45

I replace mine annually in time for Christmas ... do whatever you want!

tallduckandhandsome · 01/07/2021 12:58

I have about 8 sets for my bed alone. I am trying not buy anymore. The recent ones have been very cheap though (£5 for a Primark sherpa set in the sale and £8 for a brand new M&S Autograph brushed cotton set from the market).

But my cupboard is full, I have no space for anymore.

Meraas · 01/07/2021 12:59

That's madness. If it's cotton, that's thousands of litres of water for your bedding alone.
Blossomtoes · 01/07/2021 13:01

Go and buy your bed linen. Try to buy something you know he’d hate with a passion.

FictionalCharacter · 01/07/2021 13:09

You mean your ex husband. Ex. He doesn’t have a say in your life any more. Enjoy your lovely new bedding!

tallduckandhandsome · 01/07/2021 13:13

Do you also save 'for best', OP? I'm trying to stop doing that and just try and use stuff before it yellows with age anyway.

Peace43 · 01/07/2021 13:33

I did it and ordered a new set!!! Very pleased with myself Grin

justthecat · 01/07/2021 13:42

Well done and enjoy it!

LeonardLikesThisPost · 01/07/2021 14:05

Do it! I love my bedding - 100% cotton from Ikea, sub £30, and it gets softer with every wash and tumble. Makes me happy, and it's a cheap and healthy joy!
