Gabapentin

Has anyone taken this?

I am taking 900mg a day for pain control and it’s really affecting my handwriting and not convinced it’s helping with the pain.

Are there alternatives to this? I can’t take opiates.

I had less side effects and better pain control with pregablin.

Ask your GP for more help. I don’t know what is causing you to be on meds but for me a combination of meds helps my pain. So pregablin, naproxen ( anti inflammatory), opiates ( can you try alternatives? ), amitriptyline and paracetamol all help a lot.

I found it very helpful for nerve pain. It was a life changer as I was previously in agony. I was however on 600mg

MatildaTheCat · 29/06/2021 20:41

Sorry, I should add that I did take gabapentin for quite a while and I had to build up the dose very very slowly due to the side effects but they did improve with time. I still prefer pregablin though.

I was on it for nerve pain and was like the Very Hungry Caterpillar, I never felt full and it made my boobs bigger and sore, like PMT boobs.
I'm not a fan Smile

I got reasonable pain control with Gabapentin but I piled on weight so stopped and went back to amitriptyline.

Besswess88 · 29/06/2021 20:52

I hate amitriptyline too 😭 yes it’s for nerve damage/pain

Can I be nosy and ask how it’s affecting your handwriting? I’m on it and my handwriting has become bloody awful. I just blamed the pain in my hands.

ShitPoetryClub · 29/06/2021 20:57

Ask your GP for a referral to hand therapy? They may be able to improve the range of movement, function and strength in your hands.

I'm on 3x 500mg per day for back pain. I'd say it doesn't make any difference at all but I notice if I run out or forget to take it. No issues with hands that I'm aware of though.

Terminallysleepdeprived · 29/06/2021 21:05

I take a slightly lower dose than you op, am on 800mg a day currently. Doesn't effect my handwriting normally (take for neuralgia pain in my head).

But it is a nerve blocker so if there is an aggimrivated nerve to your hand/fingers then it would target that and may cause issues with fine motor skills.

It isnt a pain killer though so it won't stop pain in the same way as an opiate would. How long have you been on it?
