Been given a quote for two bedroom carpets for smallish bedrooms. £500! Is this unreasonably high or I am just out of date?

Depends on the quality of carpet, the width of the carpet and how much wastage there will be, whether it includes underlay and fitting....

If it's too expensive, then you need to pick a cheaper carpet.
