We have 5 sows and a baby entire boar (11 weeks, booked for castration in 2 weeks time). He is in his own section of the run but at some point today he has got in with the girls!! He could have been in there 4-5 hours!

How likely is it that I will now have 5 pregnant sows?! Is there a morning after pill for guinea pigs?!

Don’t know what to do!

Oh lord 🙈 you have my sympathies... they may well be pregnant

Didicat · 27/06/2021 19:59

Yes they definitely could be pregnant. How old are the sows and have they had babies before? It can be dangerous for the sow to get pregnant for the first time after 1 year of age.

HavanaGoodTime · 27/06/2021 19:59

Noooo! I only took on the baby as a favour to a friend! Here’s what my good deed has got me!

We have 3 sows who are 3 and 2 who are 2. No litters before, we don’t breed them. I took the lone boar as a favour to a friend as we have space to separate him but socialise him through the bats until neutered. No idea how he got through! God there could be hundreds of them!

Wheresmybiscuit3 · 27/06/2021 20:02

Lots of Gin needed I think

HavanaGoodTime · 27/06/2021 20:02

Is it likely that he successfully got around all of them?!

OP posts:
HavanaGoodTime · 27/06/2021 20:04

Oh lord this is going to be the most stressful time waiting to see if they are! The DC think this is hilarious. I’m terrified!

How dangerous is it if they’ve never had a litter before?

Oh my, I bet he's had a lovely afternoon! Brace yourself OP!

Flaunch · 27/06/2021 20:05

On the bright side newborn Guineas are the best thing ever!

ATowelAndAPotato · 27/06/2021 20:07

I think they are pretty efficient, so it is possible they are all pregnant!!

22Giraffes · 27/06/2021 20:08

He could well have got all of them pregnant, as a pp said this could be very dangerous for the sows as they are all well above the age of 1 year. After this age their anatomy means they can have great difficulties giving birth. My advice would be to consult with your vet.

I also have 5 sows, sending lots of luck to you!

Wheresmybiscuit3 · 27/06/2021 20:08

You’ll know in 60-70 days for sure

HavanaGoodTime · 27/06/2021 20:08

Yes but we could end up with 20,30, even 40!!!

And then I’ll have to try and sex them all before the whole mess starts all over again!!!

Oh crap oh crap oh crap!

Wheresmybiscuit3 · 27/06/2021 20:09

I would also call the vet personally

ATowelAndAPotato · 27/06/2021 20:09

Might want to start researching Guinea pig rescues to help you rehome as you potentially have a lot of mini pigs on the way.

ATowelAndAPotato · 27/06/2021 20:10

And yes, check in with vet as the sows are all over 1 yr and have not previously had babies.

HavanaGoodTime · 27/06/2021 20:10

Oh no! I don’t want to risk my existing Guineas! Is aborting possible?! I just have no idea!

OP posts:
HavanaGoodTime · 27/06/2021 20:11

Will make a call to the vet but I guess right now I have no choice but to just mark off the calendar and wait and see...

OP posts:
Wheresmybiscuit3 · 27/06/2021 20:11

The vet should be able to tell if they are pregnant at some point? I would have thought

TodaysFishIsTroutALaCreme · 27/06/2021 20:12

Placemarking for baby piggy pics in 70 days

PasDevantLesElephants · 27/06/2021 20:13

This happened to us long ago. I don't think we had the issue of the sow being over a year old but of the 5 girls, he was in with for a few hours, only one had ultimately babies and all four of the little pigs were sows which was a relief!

22Giraffes · 27/06/2021 20:14

You might find this info helpful.

HavanaGoodTime · 27/06/2021 20:14

2 of my girls come from a rescue locally so I will contact her I guess. Just rather embarrassing having gone to a rescue to help pigs in need of homes I’m potentially about to cause a load more to needs homes. So annoyed!

OP posts:
HavanaGoodTime · 27/06/2021 20:18

I suppose I could potentially get them all spayed ASAP?

Thanks 22giraffes that’s useful, and terrifying.

Pas devant that’s comforting!
