Wild flowers

I live in an an estate. Everyone keeps their lawn and garden impeccably. Recently people have started wild flower gardens outside their property on the grass pathway. To me it looks unkept and unsightly.
I feel if you want bees to feed why not encourage them into your own garden instead of making the pathway look like you can’t be bothered mowing that piece of grass. AIBU

Bees need all the help they can get. And wild flowers are beautiful - readjust your expectations of what ‘proper’ looks like.

DdraigGoch · 26/06/2021 23:56

You mean this sort of thing?

I like it, adds colour, unlike boring old grass.

covidandborisandworld · 26/06/2021 23:58

I like the wildflowers

SallyCinnabon · 26/06/2021 23:59

YABVVVVVVU and weird!

Why does the state of other people’s gardens/pathways bother you? Are you the neighbourhood tidy garden police or something? HmmConfused

Ijustknowitstimetogo · 27/06/2021 00:00

We need more wildflowers. They’re lovely and the bees need them.

PickAChew · 27/06/2021 00:01

Wildflowers are so pretty. I do weed the sticky buds, rosebay willow herb and bindweed from my garden (as well as the fucking nettles) but the cranesbill and toadflax are more than welcome.

Ylvamoon · 27/06/2021 00:04

Glad not everyone is like you. There wouldn't be wild anything left in our neighbourhoods.

terrywynne · 27/06/2021 00:05

Have they definitely been starting wildflower gardens or have the wild flowers been self seeding, being wildflowers and all. I love seeing all the wildflowers on the streets around me - I don't think anyone is planting them but people aren't killing them so you can see them spread year on year.

mustlovegin · 27/06/2021 00:05

We are being invaded by bees and insects ATM probably due to the No Mow May initiative. We don't need any more. Please mow your lawns people!

That’s a GREAT thing! What do you mean “invaded”? I’ve had several bees inside lately - just usher them out to a nearby flower head and be happy they’re around.

Nuggetnugget · 27/06/2021 00:09

I love wildflowers!
Surely this is a good thing?
I have lots planted in containers this year.

Those pesky bees, pollinating our gardens and fields....
TwoZeroTwoZero · 27/06/2021 00:18

I threw a load of wildflower seeds in a big tub next to our house and they're growing well (not flowering yet though). I visited a wildflower area last week and the colours were beautiful: vivid reds, bright blues, vibrant yellows and brilliant whites. They don't make the area look untidy at all; they brighten it up and make it look summery and cheerful.

BarbarianMum · 27/06/2021 00:20

Re-educate your taste OP. The 60s and 70s are long gone.

If bees don't thrive, we will starve. It's as simple as that.

Even Jeremy Clarkson gets this.

Sparklesocks · 27/06/2021 00:59

I think it sounds nice. And there’s a difference between a small patch of wildflowers and just leaving a large garden space to overgrow and become out of control.

SorrySoldOut · 27/06/2021 01:04

Do you want it all minimalist with neutral colours and grey planters with a grey fence and grey front door?

No colour
No irregular shapes

All just symetrical with clean lines and GREYER than a grey thing??

AlwaysLatte · 27/06/2021 01:06

How lovely 🐝

MistyGreenAndBlue · 27/06/2021 01:09

Sounds lovely to me but even if I didn't like it much, I couldn't care less really. It's none of my business - or yours

Mousetown · 27/06/2021 01:52

Great news!

Please mow your lawns people!
If I lived near you I would be slacker than I already am mowing my lawn. Then I would chuck some extra bee friendly wild seed around - just to annoy you.

Onairjunkie · 27/06/2021 07:42

You are being so, so unreasonable OP.

I have a farm and I’ve rewilded a six-acre paddock. With the tractor I have just cut a narrow strip/path through it so I can get through, but beyond that I’ve let it go. It is absolutely magical. It is full of deer, birds of every kind from tiny garden birds to birds of prey, rabbits and field mice. But they very best thing is the hum like a Lancaster bomber of the millions of bees flying from each of the beautiful wildflowers. How can that be a bad thing? I walk through it every day.

Soubriquet · 27/06/2021 07:46

Yabu!!

Wildflowers are beautiful. Much prettier than “perfect lawns”

mogtheexcellent · 27/06/2021 07:46

@Onairjunkie

I am utterly jealous.

My DH is like the op. It's a constant battle inspired garden. Sigh.
