Out of date cake

I know, I know, how can such a thing as out of date cake happen but I have just eaten a big chunk of Lyles golden syrup cake that was out of date in November last year! has anyone else decided that the risk was worth it with things like this? I'm not a big stickler for use by dates (Obviously) but this is a record for me!

You'll be fine. If it smells fine and tastes nice, eat it Grin

tellmewhentheLangshiplandscoz · 25/06/2021 10:49

Immediately scoff a bowl of custard and you will definitely be fine.

I can't guarantee your safety if you don't though Angry

chickenyhead · 25/06/2021 10:50

It is cake.

You let it go out of date.

I cannot speak to you.

Kobayashi21 · 25/06/2021 10:54

It's a best before date, not a use by date.

mummumumumumumumumumum · 25/06/2021 11:02

in fairness it was gooey and delicious so I have no regrets

It’ll be fine.

Mumdiva99 · 25/06/2021 11:14

OOO you just reminded me that husband bought a Lyles cake this week.....not sure what flavour. I hope it's Golden Syrup and not ginger.....

You'll be fine - as long as it didn't have mould growing on it, smell funny or taste odd it will be good. (just don't think too long and hard about what chemicals must be in a cake to make it last that long......)

InTheKitchenAtParties · 25/06/2021 11:14

@chickenyhead

😂😂😂
someonelockthefridgealready · 25/06/2021 11:22

I'm pretty sure the amount of syrup in it would preserve it for all eternity anyway. You'll be fiiiinnnee. Glad you enjoyed it.

TeapotCollection · 25/06/2021 11:27

I’m with chickenyhead

OhGiveUp · 25/06/2021 11:31

You let cake go out of date, not by just a few days but by 7 months!!😭
Not just a cheap sponge either, but a delicious cake that needs a large cuppa to wash one slice down!
What is wrong with you? Are you even a female??
I'm traumatised. I need counselling just thinking about it. 😮

P.s I hope you are it all up 👍

OhGiveUp · 25/06/2021 11:32

Ate, not are!!

TheKeatingFive · 25/06/2021 11:32

I reckon golden syrup is indestructible.

Amdone123 · 25/06/2021 11:34

You'll live.
I really fancy cake and custard now.

mummumumumumumumumumum · 25/06/2021 11:37

I did enjoy it with a cuppa but the thought of it with custard makes me queasy

Long life cake? It will be fine.

Fresh cake with icing like buttercream? Thats dodgy ground.

Auntienumber8 · 25/06/2021 11:39

Rookie numbers op, DH deliberately buys mince pies every year and leaves them till the following Christmas so they have matured.

Pigeonpocket · 25/06/2021 12:26

It will be fine, probably. Its almost 40% sugar and contains no fresh ingredients, only dried milk and dried egg, plus preservatives.

I really want some now!

My usually rule is that I double how long it takes things to reach the best before date and if it still smells fine and has no visible mould, it's fine. So if the date on a cake is a year in the future, I reckon it's good for another year after that.

IToldYouIWasFreaky · 25/06/2021 12:32

It's a best before date, not a use by date.

Exactly. Worst case scenario, it might just not be as tasty as it would have been back in Nov.

I once found unopened brown sauce in the cupboard that was 4 years past its best before date. It tasted fine, which is great surprise really given that it's mostly sugar, salt and vinegar!

OhGiveUp · 25/06/2021 13:01

I've just had some chutney on a cheese sandwich for my lunch.
It went out of date years ago, but it's still good to eat.

As seen on the lid.

Out of date cake
BatFaceGirly · 25/06/2021 13:11

@OhGiveUp bleeeeeee. I could barely touch that, let alone put it in my mouth.

I also wouldn't eat a cake 7 months out of date. And I love cake!

echt · 25/06/2021 13:44

I don't even like cake but imagine that with its sugar content it would have a half-life of plutonium.

Scoff on.

Wishimaywishimight · 25/06/2021 13:57

I'm still trying to process this...

chickenyhead · 25/06/2021 14:43

I know right????

Cake has a date.

Mind blown.
