There's a giant winged beast in my bathroom, trying to kill me. When I saw it sitting on the blind I thought it was a moth. A big moth. Then it started buzzing around like a wasp. It's not a wasp and it's not a moth. It's got big moth wings but a wasp body, like someone has glued moth wings to a fat wasp. And given it steroids.

What is it? Why does it want to kill me?

Have managed to shut myself in my bedroom and it’s still in the bathroom….probably plotting its next attack. I normally get up a couple of times in the night to go to the bathroom, and that’s when it’s going to pounce, isn’t it?

Make it go away!

It's probably a wasp moth. They are a moth, and won't hurt you.

Open the window, switch off the light, he'll leave.

FredAstairesChair · 25/06/2021 06:00

Is it a hummingbird moth? They're quite rare and harmless.

Sciurus83 · 25/06/2021 06:32

This time of year could be one of the hawk moths, they are beautiful and have been attracted to the light and definitely aren't going to hurt you. Just usher it outside.

Sciurus83 · 25/06/2021 06:34

Privet hawk moths have a stripey body, could be one of those. Youre lucky they're cool!

lidoshuffle · 25/06/2021 06:54

Don't kill it!

Therunecaster · 25/06/2021 07:26

Omg I had exactly the same beastie in my bathroom yesterday at 02:00. Mine looked more like a giant spider with month wings!

I’ve had a slug fall on me whilst sitting drinking my coffee in the garden, fair to say I’m now wide awake.

LegArmpits · 25/06/2021 07:28

I bet you it's a cockchafer giggles

Margotshypotheticaldog · 25/06/2021 07:31

runs off to Google wasp moths
This is like the thread with the animals I've never even heard of, ( with the creepy storks 😱)
Wasp moths are so beautiful, didn't know they even existed!

BeepBoopBop · 25/06/2021 07:36

Whilst admiring a monster grasshopper close up, an even monsterer spider shot out of the wall and grabbed it! Glad he didn't think I was competing for it 😱

@lidoshuffle

Don't kill it!
I’d never kill an insect, I couldn’t even step on an ant. I might deafen an insect with my screaming but I wouldn’t kill it.

That is the most horrendous thing I have ever heard. This is the first time I’ve been glad that I don’t have a garden.

Thank you for your suggestions as to the identity of the monster. I’ve googled each of them and got as far as privet hawk moth when google suggested a Pine Hawk-moth, and that looks similar.
I’ve opened the window as far as I can and shut the bathroom door. If it is still there when I get home from work I may have to enlist the help of my next door neighbour. He’s a big, burly man but that moth wasp thing looks like it might overpower him!

I had a stag beetle flying around my bedroom the other night. It was so noisy I was scared to go in my room.

JaceLancs · 25/06/2021 08:56

DS had to catch a bat a few evenings ago - I can cope with insects but anything bigger that flies terrifies me

To ask one of you to come and rescue from from a flying beastie?
BlackeyedSusan · 25/06/2021 09:20

I had a moth the size of a stealth bomber. I did ponder what the staff at a and e would think turning up with a moth related eye injury after the damn thing flew in my eye

Glitterblue · 25/06/2021 09:28

We currently have about 7 moths living in our bedroom, they seem to just lurk on the ceiling during the day and then at night they start flapping and fluttering everywhere so it's a case of get into bed as fast as possible and get the light off ASAP!! The other night I realised i hadn't set my alarm before putting the light off, and tried to do it as quickly as possible but it didn't stop one from spying the light off phone and dive bombing me 😬 I screamed 😂 DH had fallen asleep on the couch and thankfully didn't hear me and it didn't wake DD!

Glitterblue · 25/06/2021 09:29

That was meant to say the light from my phone
