Landlord Tax Evasion.. AIBU to report?

My ex partner and I was in a relationship for six months. Throughout the whole time, I found out that he cheated on me (he disposed of me for someone else immediately). Towards the end, he told me about a rental property that he was renting out, and boasted that he doesn't pay tax to HMRC. I reported him after we split
Was I being unreasonable?

Yep

Avoidance · 24/06/2021 21:46

Yeah

underneaththeash · 24/06/2021 21:48

Of course not. The country would be screwed if no-one paid tax.

specialcase · 24/06/2021 21:49

Nope

Cherrysoup · 24/06/2021 22:05

YANBU. Why should a tax cheat be allowed to get away with that?

Zimmerframe123 · 25/06/2021 01:09

Why do you think you are?

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 25/06/2021 03:32

No. IMO tax evasion by LLs is rife, and as a LL who does pay tax I would like to see a lot more of them reported.

FiveShelties · 25/06/2021 03:40

Would you have reported him if you had not split up?

Ohhok · 25/06/2021 07:09

I would have done it too OP. He shouldn’t be committing crimes if he doesn’t want to get caught.

FindingMeno · 25/06/2021 07:11

Hell no.

Sometimeswinning · 25/06/2021 07:13

Nope! I'd have done the same!

NaiceAm · 25/06/2021 07:37

Any number of people stood on their doorstep and clapped for carers and the NHS and bemoaned them not being paid enough whilst at the same time not declaring all their income and paying taxes properly. I think you are right to have reported him. Think of it this way - your actions might pay for a nurse for a year. We should all be doing this and we should all be avoiding cash only businesses if we think the reason for the cash only policy is to avoid declaring tax.

StickyIcky · 25/06/2021 15:32

Yes I did repo him. And yes I am proud of myself that I did. I hope it caused immense uproar, too. Should he not have cheated, I would have left it. His problem, not mine... 😅😏

If you are so clever why not report him as soon as you knew?

After all, that is the morally right thing to do…. Unless you like the extra money and wealth you could have potentially got if you divorced?

StickyIcky · 25/06/2021 19:27

Zimmerframe123 cos I like stirring shit to those who have wronged me... Who wouldn't!?

You should have reported tge scumbag as soon as you knew but presumably you were happy with the lifestyle for the six months?

StickyIcky · 25/06/2021 19:32

@Sillawithans

Yep
Why?

Roodicus21 · 25/06/2021 19:37

It's not about the tax, it's the fact he cheated! Has he not have cheated you probably would've said nothing and gone alone with it. I don't think you can take the moral high ground tbh.

MythsandSparkles · 25/06/2021 19:37

YANBU to report him.

YABU to want a pat on the back for doing the right thing when you only reported him to cause him trouble - not because you had any objection to what he did.

StickyIcky · 25/06/2021 19:38

I think I can tbh. I definitely got him back aha
