I was referred to see a neurologist due to some sensory symptoms I have been experiencing. He told me he would do an MRI and some nerve function tests and would see me again once all the results are back. My nerve tests aren't scheduled until 1st July, but my MRI came back on Friday and he got in touch right away to ask me to come in and see him this coming Wednesday (so three working days later) to talk through it.

Some of my friends are trying to reassure me that it might be nothing, but if he's called me back sooner than anticipated to discuss my MRI (and without even seeing the nerve function results) it's not going to be good news is it? My friends said he'd tell me in advance over the phone if it was bad, but I don't think it works like that? Part of me thinks it's unfair of him to leave it hanging over me like this over the weekend, but the other half of me knows they see people with illnesses all the time and that's just how this works.

Just trying to prepare myself really. Grateful for any experiences.

Thanks

No experience, just here to say I don’t think they discuss good or bad stuff over the phone. Flowers

Mistyplanet · 20/06/2021 22:03

I think its still 50/50- could be good or bad news. Try and keep busy and take each day as it comes. Whatever the news is you WILL be ok Xx

PurpleyBlue · 20/06/2021 22:04

Could be good or bad news Cake

PurpleyBlue · 20/06/2021 22:05

Even if it’s a diagnosis of something it doesn’t necessarily mean it’s something that can’t be treated or helped in some way. Try to relax and be patient and wishing you all the best.

xxKatie9806xx · 20/06/2021 22:08

In my experience (with my Mum) - I would assume they’ve found something that needs to be discussed but it could be a multitude of things and something that is easily treatable. I’m really, really hoping it’s nothing serious and wishing you all the best. Will you be taking someone for support to your appointment?

I doubt they would give news over the phone, good or bad, ime.

On the face of it, I would be worried too, however I had a not dissimilar for ds after an MRI.
He had it beginning of May, got the paed appointment for follow up in July. About a week after the MRI I got a follow up letter saying "due to unforeseen circumstances the appointment had to be moved"... to about 3 days time.
I thought exactly the same as you. However ds had an ENT appointment that afternoon, and when in with his consultant, I mentioned this and said I was worried. We went off for his hearing test, and when I came back the consultant told me she'd phoned the paed involved and asked-and there was nothing on the MRI, but she was going on annual leave over the date in July and happened to have a cancellation.

Hopefully for you it will be similar. Good luck.

Thelnebriati · 20/06/2021 22:11

Ime your neurologist won't tell you results over the phone, its not like getting a result of some blood tests from your GP.
I know your friends mean well but they aren't being helpful. There will be a self help group and a Facebook group for the disorder they are testing for, so join those asap.

Looubylou · 20/06/2021 22:18

Hope things are better than you fear OP 💐

MouseInCatsClaws · 20/06/2021 22:19

Good luck op, even if it is a diagnosis you were hoping not to get, it might not be as bleak as you fear (I got a serious neurological diagnosis over 20 years ago and am living a completely normal life, thanks to modern medicine). Good luck

MadeForThis · 20/06/2021 22:23

Surely there's just as much chance that the mri had rules things out as found something concerning.

There could be a dozen reasons why they want to see you on Wednesday. Try not to worry.

bookworm100 · 21/06/2021 08:53

Thank you everyone for your replies.

@xxKatie9806xx Yes, they are letting me take someone with me. I am taking my sister in law as we are close and she is very supportive.

@MargaretThursday That's really interesting about your experience, I hadn't considered that it could be a scheduling thing. I think it's unlikely but that will help me not to panic between now and then so thank you.

@Thelnebriati - Thank you for understanding. Yes, their reaction is quite frustrating to be honest because it just makes me feel guilty/silly for worrying on top of the obvious worrying and I'm sure they'd be the same if the situation were reversed!

@MouseInCatsClaws - Thank you so much for sharing your experience. I'm sorry to hear you were diagnosed with a serious condition but it's wonderful to hear you're living a normal life. That gives me lots of hope.

I just wanted to update that the news wasn't bad! There were a couple of things, a problem with my neck and an inflamed pituitary gland...but nothing compared to what I was fearing! Just thought I'd update in case others find this thread at a later date. Thanks again everyone for your support xx

Amazing news OP. I didn’t want to say but I was really worried as it reminded me of when my mum got a call back and hers was a brain tumour. So, so pleased for you.
