Hii

I'm still learning the English language. Which one is more correct

OP posts:
georgarina · 18/06/2021 21:08

'Who is it?'

SticksAndStoned · 18/06/2021 21:10

I wouldn't say either, I would open the door. But if I did say one I would say 'who's there'

Lora918 · 18/06/2021 21:10

@georgarina

'Who is it?'
Thank you I didn't think this was an option

Are you asking how you’d answer a knock at the door? I think the best response depends on the particular situation. Could you give some more detail?

Obvious if it’s a joke…”knock, knock” is always followed by “who’s there?”

JesusInTheCabbageVan · 18/06/2021 21:11

Well this is MN, so when someone knocks on the door one should hide and start a thread about it.

MissCruellaDeVil · 18/06/2021 21:13

Could you not just open the door? Use the spy hole or security cameras if you are concerned.

LoopTheLoops · 18/06/2021 21:15

I don’t say anything I just open the door.

Verbena87 · 18/06/2021 21:15

I think either is fine.

😂

On a serious note.
Who is there and Who is it are both fine to use.

frogswimming · 18/06/2021 21:18

Erm both sound rude to me. Look through peephole or other hidden viewpoint. Hide if you don't like the look of them. Otherwise answer the door. Asking first makes it seem rude - if they aren't acceptable you're not going to answer? Defo hide instead!

ohnomesandwiches · 18/06/2021 21:18

Listen out for someone ringing a bell

AlGorithim · 18/06/2021 21:29

Neither is correct. You have to start chanting ‘there’s somebody at the door, there’s somebody at the door’.

Nordicwannabe · 18/06/2021 21:30

'who's there' or possibly 'who is it' if you are asking the person at the door to identify themselves

'who's that' if you are asking someone else their opinion on who it might be at the door

Midnightballerina · 18/06/2021 21:32

My Fil sings ' someone's knocking at the door, someone's ringing the bell, do us a favour & let them in. Every bloody time & now my kids do it.

Slippy78 · 18/06/2021 21:35

I don't say anything, I just open the door....

PurpleyBlue · 18/06/2021 21:39

Hello?

Meredusoleil · 18/06/2021 21:45

I always ask "Who is it?".

merryhouse · 18/06/2021 21:45

midnight ballerina oh cheers, now I have a Macca earworm.

Tell him it's Sister Suzie, Brother John, Martin Luther, Phil and Don.

I was planning to say this!

From a language point of view, if you like to focus on grammar:

Who is there - ‘there’ is an adverb, it goes with the verb is, to signify a particular place. Who is there, in that place, at the door.

Who is ‘that’ - that is a pronoun, so you’re specifically asking who the person is.

Either would be understood in the way that you mean it, even if not perfect English - so don’t worry if you do get it “wrong” 🙂

Cocomarine · 18/06/2021 21:46

Sorry😁
GlamGiraffe · 18/06/2021 22:11

I say, hello, who is it?

FourTurnings · 18/06/2021 22:11

Just answer the door. Or leave it. Up to you.

HippeePrincess · 18/06/2021 22:15

@Divineswirls

I always say 'hello who is it'
Do you? Surely you open the door and see who it is!

I usually say “oh I wonder who that could be” as most people just walk into my house!
