Am I being unreasonable to be so obsessed with the layout of the Friday Night Dinner house?

The layout just doesn't feel right. It took me ages to work it all out. I may have even drawn it out. In my defence I've got Covid so I'm stuck in bed with box sets! Anyone else agree?

Excellent thread.

After the last series, when the lovely Paul Ritter had died, there was a retrospective that included how they filmed it. One of the bedrooms was dedicated to actors crashing out as the house got so crowded with crew, etc. The episode included some words from Ritter, plainly near the end, as he looked very ill indeed.

Weirdly I’ve been obsessing over this the last few days. DS1 has been watching this and is well and truly hooked. DH and I watched it all a few years ago. It’s so brilliant. Shit on it!!

The bit with the ketchup and he karate the wall, a great show, not keen on Jim's character.

I always think the kitchen is at the back. It doesn't sit right in my head that it's not.

It is?

Nice bit of Squirrel...

I must ask at the local cafe if they do crumble.

raegenholatree · 03/08/2022 07:36

I agree actually OP! I think it’s a very claustrophobic house. Why isn’t the dining room adjoining to the kitchen? Why is the downstairs bathroom in that really awkward spot next to the front door? If I bought that house I’d be trying to make it more open plan.

goldfinchonthelawn · 03/08/2022 07:37

I thought you were going to say it's such a good layout. I love the layout of their house. Compact but has everything you need. I will now fuss about the downstairs loo being too big and having a window, though. I thought it was under their stairs.

raegenholatree · 03/08/2022 07:39

The awkward closed-plan layout is probably intentional though. Half of the plots wouldn’t work in an open planned house where the characters can see what each other is up to. Each room NEEDS to be self-contained and separate.

ClottedCreamAndStrawberries · 03/08/2022 08:02

I can’t say I’d ever thought of those things but they make sense.

ClottedCreamAndStrawberries · 03/08/2022 08:02

I do want some crimble crumble though 😆

Is that floor plan definitely right? I could be misremembering but I'm sure during the scenes that take place in the hallway you can see into the kitchen. I can never get my head around how the house looks so big from the outside but has quite a cramped feel inside. I'm going to have to re-watch now, floor plan in hand or it'll drive me mad.

Yes, it works out. You do sometimes see into the kitchen from the hall scenes if they are standing at the end of it, near the bottom of the stairs

We love FND and I never noticed this lay out!

You're right, it seems odd, however my parents house also has a living room at the back with a utility room off it. My mum blocked the through entry/walled up the doorway and built a downstairs loo against that wall instead. You could also access the utility room from the kitchen on the other side so it wasn't cut off. The living room is big but is also only accessible through the dining room. So perhaps not tv set material. It never seemed weird to live with. I wonder what the Goodmans would make of it!

Floor plan

That does help so much, thank you! Whenever they were in the living room i never could work it out!
