AIBU to think DVLA should confirm with you if car is being scrapped?

So checking bank for another direct debit when noticed car tax hasn't been taken. Bank confirmed it is an active direct debit still and no attempt has been made to take funds via it by the DVLA, since first installment taken. Finally got hold of DVLA ...which was ridiculously hard in itself....to be told they had been told car was scrapped and so they cancelled direct debit! No direct communication from them and car is sat perfectly fine on our drive! Now having to jump through hoops to prove we still have it...but can't actually pay to tax it as the car doesn't exist on their system :( Neither of us did so so ? Either malicious, or an error in inputting at DVLA yet could take up to three weeks to sort!
So AIBU to think if a car is being marked down as scrapped, they should double check this with the registered owner?

YANBU to think they should.
YABU to think they're competent enough to.

There’s no such thing as a registered owner but when a car is scrapped the DVLA sends confirmation to the registered keeper.

Purpleheadgirl · 07/06/2021 22:16

@Shade17 well you new what I meant......but the point is, they didn't tell us......first thing we found out was when saw direct debit had gone through

YANBU... but its the DVLA... pissups and breweries there!

littlepattilou · 07/06/2021 22:27

@Purpleheadgirl YANBU, that they probably should have checked.

When we got rid of our last car and got our new one - well, 2017 - new to us - we got a slip of paper (compliment slip size,) from the DVLA. It said 'this is to confirm you are no longer the registered keeper of this red vauxhall astra. Please contact us on 0800-bollox-2-it, if this information is incorrect.'

However, if it is only going to take 3 weeks to sort out, then that isn't that bad. My neighbour bought a car in the last week of October 2020, and only got her V5C (log book) in the last week in March 2021. A five month wait!!! They were sooooooooo far behind because of covid (any excuse!) that she thought she was never going to get it.

@littlepattilou that's rubbish :( But through someone's error, or malicious intent, we now can't tax the car, and therefore drive it, until they sort it on the computer....which allegedly.... will take 3 weeks, but who knows! :(

Are you sure it was malicious? And not just an error?

I am sorry to hear you cannot drive it. I didn't realise.

Hope it is sorted soon! Smile
