Wrong congratulated on pregnancy

socialmediamishap · 06/06/2021 21:08

A friends wife posted some pictures of her at a baby shower with quite an obvious baby bump. She was literally holding balloon letters that spelt 'baby'.

I 'liked' the photo and wrote congratulations. They hadn't told me directly they are expecting but I saw the bump and balloons and assumed.

Anyway, I hadn't read the caption properly and it was her friends baby shower, not hers.

Got a stroppy text from her husband saying they weren't ready to announce the pregnancy and I had outed them.

AIBU to think if you want to keep your pregnancy a secret then don't post pictures of yourself pregnant on social media?

Do they think people are blind? Grin

Butternutsqoosh · 06/06/2021 21:11

I thought you were going to say she wasn't actually pregnant! Which I have had and it was mortifying and kicked me up the bum to lose the extra stone I was carrying Confused I really wouldn't give it another thought, it sounds like it looked obvious so they shouldn't have put any pictures like that up if they did t want any comments

Killahangilion · 06/06/2021 21:11

YANBU.

He’s being ridiculous. How would you have known if she hadn’t posted the picture?

For sake of harmony, I’d probably apologise but point out that it was obvious she was pregnant because of how glowing she looked in the photo or some similar guff and then ignore them for a bit.

Amammai · 06/06/2021 21:12

Thank goodness she is actually pregnant and it wasn’t just a bloated tummy!! Don’t think you’ve done anything wrong though, silly for her to pose with the balloons and upload the picture if she doesn’t want people to jump to conclusions.

Mumdiva99 · 06/06/2021 21:12

Just respond that you thought that was the announcement - given the bump and the letters and that was all you were responding too....

TaVeryMuchLove · 06/06/2021 21:13

YANBU

That’s fucking ridiculous

Theunamedcat · 06/06/2021 21:13

All she had to do is remove your comment and pm you no need to get her husband involved 🙄

KeyboardWorriers · 06/06/2021 21:15

Normally I get pretty cross when people assume a visible belly means pregnancy. But in these circumstances yanbu.

drpet49 · 06/06/2021 21:15

They are being ridiculous.

3cats4poniesandababy · 06/06/2021 21:18

So she posted a picture of her with a baby bump, abit maybe a small one, while holding balloon letters spelling 'baby'..... and then wondered why you commented congratulations....

Umm because any and everyone else who has ever posted a photo like that has been doing it as a pregnancy announcement.

Chloemol · 06/06/2021 21:18

I would just respond they shouldn’t have posted a picture of her obviously pregnant and leave it at that

ForeverSinging · 06/06/2021 21:19

Just reply and say they outed themselves to all the people with eyes. Can congratulations be withdrawn?

Raindropumbrella · 06/06/2021 21:19

Oh my goodness I thought you were going to say she wasn’t pregnant! Grin

Yanbu at all, they need to get a grip

Moonshine11 · 06/06/2021 21:20

Their being ridiculous, people aren’t blind.

What did you reply!? Or have you not yet?

Pinkbrush · 06/06/2021 21:20

He/they are being ridiculous

SirusTheVirus · 06/06/2021 21:21

Had they told you independently of the photo that they were pregnant?

What did you reply to him?

HandfulofDust · 06/06/2021 21:21

You didn't out them they outed themselves! They might luck themselves for putting the photo up if they wanted to make a theatrical announcement but they can't blame you for stating the obvious!

CatsPyjama · 06/06/2021 21:23

if you want to keep your pregnancy a secret then don't post pictures of yourself pregnant on social media?

I think this is exactly what you should send back.

socialmediamishap · 06/06/2021 21:24

@SirusTheVirus no they hadn't let me know she was pregnant directly but I saw the photo and the bump and just guessed she was (she is tiny so it's v obvious). I didn't read the caption properly which explained it was someone else's baby shower.

I haven't replied but will just say sorry and congratulations as I don't want to fall out but I don't think I have made a massive faux pas here but wasn't sure.

Me and dh went to a wedding where the bride was quite obviously at least 5 months gone. Her family apparently had no idea!!
Blush
Was so embarrassing when the vows mentioned having a family etc...

NoProblem123 · 06/06/2021 21:30

A lot of Batshit Friend problems tonight on MN !
I’ve no idea how you put up with them Flowers

pictish · 06/06/2021 21:48

They’re being an arse. Don’t stress about it. For the sake of politeness you can say, “so sorry, it wasn’t intentional” but don’t elaborate or expand on it or keep apologising.

PainterInPeril · 06/06/2021 21:59

@socialmediamishap Grin That's priceless!

You absolutely haven’t. Don’t beat yourself up, they’re clearly a bit dim 🙈

EmeraldShamrock · 06/06/2021 22:09

Phew I'm glad she was pregnant.
They're being silly.
