Random, unimportant work question

Whenever you walk past your colleagues in the corridor, stairs or whatever do you still say a quick "hello" (i.e you've already said good-morning the first time you all arrived at work). I mean colleagues who you work with day to day so not a random contractor or whatever. So after your initial greeting in the morning; but if you walk past them do you still say a quick hello, and is it the norm to not or is it rude not to? I'm just wondering because I just don't know anymore, I always say hi but it appears that might not be the norm?

I would just smile.

MrsTulipTattsyrup · 06/06/2021 15:52

I might say ‘hello again’, or just smile. I don’t think anyone would be offended either way. But it is a bit weird not to acknowledge at all that you’re passing someone you know.

Sunsetboater · 06/06/2021 16:12

I lived in France for quite a while and was told in the early days that it's custom there to only say hello once during the day to someone you meet - apparently they think it's weird if you keep saying hello or hi again.

qualitygirl · 06/06/2021 16:14

Yes I would.

Rose789 · 06/06/2021 16:20

Normally say something like how it’s going and the other replies living the dream, its almost lunchtime/hometime, or kill me now.

Howshouldibehave · 06/06/2021 16:22

Probably just smile or make some other passing comment that isn’t hi!

HughGrantsHair · 06/06/2021 16:24

Just a quick "alright?" or a smile from me. I pass people loads of times in a day.

BlueDucky · 06/06/2021 16:24

I worked in an office once were people kept saying "alright?" When they passed you. No idea if that's normal.

LawnFever · 06/06/2021 16:29

I’d probably smile and say hi, I wouldn’t ignore them

Sideorderofchips · 06/06/2021 16:31

Always say hi

wanderedlonelyasacloud · 06/06/2021 16:36

I'd definitely let on to them - either by smiling or saying "hello again!", "alright?", or depending on the coworker a good old "fancy seeing you here" (cheesy I know)

DirtyDancing · 06/06/2021 16:41

Probably just a little smile, one can’t go round all day saying hello several times a day to the same people. Bit OTT. And I’m a social pleaser! It’s a no from me

melj1213 · 06/06/2021 17:05

Whether or not I say anything depends on the context - if its someone I don't work closely with then I'll probably just smile and maybe a friendly "hey".

If it is someone I work with then I'm more likely to make conversation or say something like "Alright?" that allows for conversation if the other person wants or can just be left as a polite greeting.

Of course if they're already talking to someone or obviously busy (eg on the phone, hurrying with a pile of documents etc) then I'd just smile and continue past.

raeroe · 06/06/2021 17:09

@Rose789 are you me?? Cause that's pretty much all of my exact sayings along with shoot me, is it too late to call in sick and then my favourite "if one of us fakes an accident then we can both go"

Summertime21 · 06/06/2021 17:18

I would smile but not keep saying hi

HRVY · 06/06/2021 18:56

@Sunsetboater

Ahh yep I remember learning the same when I lived in France!!

Apparently you say ‘bonjour’ to someone the first time you see them that day, and then if you see them again, you’re meant to say ‘re-bonjour’ (which is basically ‘hello again’ - if you don’t say an alternative!) That threw me for a while when I first moved to France Grin
