To think it’s wrong for doctors to make judgemental comments

When I was admitted to a mental health ward back in December. The duty doctor said “despite what she says it’s clear she aimed to get admitted” I was detained and had refused an informal admission as it doesn’t personally help me.

I'm not sure, there must be some degree of expressing his professional opinion (and indeed exercising his judgement) as not all things can be easily quantified especially in mental health. Was this in your notes or a spoken comment? Was it a conclusion he made based on evidence/assessing you or a jaded comment based on nothing?

Timber54446 · 03/06/2021 20:16

It was letter that was written as a summary to my GP surgery. I feel he based his comments on the fact I was curious about the ward consultant and mentioned that I know another patient who had been there that had Covid recently

That may not be negative judgement though; it depends on context - it could well mean that you recognised yourself your needed an admission which is insight and very useful.

What was he like the rest of the time?

Timber54446 · 03/06/2021 20:29

Making jokes eg these plenty of germs in that x place. The place where I had the incident which meant I ended up inpatient.

Okay, well it doesn't seem like a baseless or unkind judgement then, more like he's just relaying something that may be useful to your GP for your continued care. It sounds like he might be urging caution in case you minimise your issues, which can be the case, and is better than him being dismissive or not caring enough.

So you did aim to get admitted?

Which bit of what he said do you take exception to?

MaryBeardsShoes · 03/06/2021 20:41

Sounds like this person is accusing you of lying which is going to touch a nerve (whether you are being honest or not, for different reasons).

Sorry you've had a rough time OP.

Grapewrath · 03/06/2021 20:43

He’s giving his professional opinion.
Interested to know what you meant by ‘curious about the ward consultant’ and how you feel this may have informed his opinion.

Timber54446 · 03/06/2021 20:44

No I didn’t aim to get admitted I didn’t want to go into hospital. I didn’t know I would be detained.

Are you doing ok OP, do you have a cpn supporting you in he community as have noticed you make quite a few threads today all quite similar and they may be best placed to answer your questions.

Timber54446 · 03/06/2021 20:47

I said I had heard there was a new ward consultant that’s all.

I do have cpn who I get on well with but she is on leave for two weeks and I’ve just got the notes.

Guavaf1sh · 03/06/2021 21:01

I don’t think you should have access to the notes

BeastforLease · 03/06/2021 21:02

I sometimes find it's best to write down my concerns, worries and feelings in bullet form, and then try to put them away until I can discuss with a HCP who it would be appropriate to raise it with.

Did you request the copies of your notes?

Timber54446 · 03/06/2021 21:03

I did yes and now regret it a lot.

Perhaps you could speak to your GP or the manager of the ward you were in?

Grapewrath · 03/06/2021 21:05

OP why don’t you have a chat with the CPN to get some context around the comment- there might be more on their online system.
I understand that you’re annoyed but focus on your recovery as opposed to this comment

Timber54446 · 03/06/2021 21:25

I don’t have an appointment till the 18th now unfortunately
