Read a thread about the bbc documentary about what we feed our kids and I watched the last 10 mins of it on YouTube. Then I watched 'high on the hog' on Netflix and I just feel so shit about everything I eat. Spent the rest of the day watching African cooking shows on YouTube and now I want to move to Ghana and eat real food...

I don't usually watch tv all day but I'm ill,.. dh is cooking Chicago town pizzas for the kids ffs and I'm laying in bed regretting my lack Of culture and appreciation for all the amazing food served all over the world... I just feel crap about how uncultured I am and I'm determined to do better from now on. I want to cook great food but most days I lack the enthusiasm to cook nuggets.

However I did make this sausage roll for my dh last week to commemorate the fact he spent most of the day being a dick... pic coming in a second

LagunaBubbles · 30/05/2021 19:31

Am I the only one that can't see a picture?

LostInTime · 30/05/2021 19:34

Not being au fait with Ghanaian food, I am assuming they cook using meat, vegetables, grains, and fruit etc? What is preventing you buying those things here?

DaisyFeather · 30/05/2021 19:44

BIL is Ghanaian. His cooking is amazing. It takes some time but it’s always worth it. Try some recipes - jollof is a good place to start.

I’m in awe of how long he spends preparing and cooking. It’s like a mindful art form.

And international supermarkets are incredible - so many fruit and veg look entirely different eg avocados the size of a mango.

FunnyWonder · 30/05/2021 20:07

What do you mean uncultured? That sausage roll is art. A sculpture no less!

MurryFuff · 30/05/2021 20:16

Just googled Jollof

Looks amazing

Why thank you... I drew on my years of experience to harness the je ne sais quoi of fine sausage

Thanks Jollof looks lovely and something I can definitely try to make... I always want to make some interesting food and then get super overwhelmed with the recipes and ingredients. Maybe I should do one per week to make it manageable

If you wat to try new things look at the simply cook app. 1500 recipes to choose from, none take longer than 30 minutes to make (prep and cooking time). I've picked up some recipes from here that I hadn't previously heard of
Summerfun54321 · 30/05/2021 21:03

Is that a smiley face or genital warts?

🤣🤣🤣 that was my first thought too

amy2021 · 30/05/2021 21:09

I am married to a Ghanaian and currently living in Ghana. The food is all fresh and cooked from scratch. This is good and bad as it takes forever but tastes amazing. However they don't really eat many vegetables and the food is quite carbohydrate heavy as that's what you need here to sustain you. Whilst I love the food here I do miss the variety of food available in the U.K. like Thai food and good Indian dishes. it's there you just need to get googling!

If anyone is wanting to try an amazing Ghanaian dish I would recommend omo tuo (rice balls) and groundnut soup. It's basically satay chicken sauce/soup with sticky rice balls. A-mae-zing!

Deereamer · 30/05/2021 21:13

That sausage roll is amazing Grin

From the cooking point of view - simply cook is amazing - lots of different cuisines to try and most of the recipes are fairly simple to make.

Hallyup6 · 30/05/2021 21:27

Just showed it to my husband and he asked where the mayonnaise dip is 🤢

Tal45 · 30/05/2021 21:31

Goodness, you could teach the Ghanaians a thing or two I'm sure.....

MustardRose · 30/05/2021 21:42

You have to pitch that design to Greggs Grin
