Lost all phone contacts?

friend has been seeing a guy for about a year , regularly meeting and texting etc.
Last week she realised he hadn't contacted her for about 5 days which was unusual.
She had been busy at work so not messaged him as usual. After 10 days and she messaged him and he told her he'd blown up his phone(!) and lost all his contacts.

Seems suspicious to me.
Can you really lose all contact details from whats app, text etc on a broken phone?

I think you can lose everything if you don't have them backed up online.

Hmm I would expect that he had other ways to contact her - email, mutual friends, popping to her house? What would he have done if she hadn’t messaged?
