I'm convinced I'm not being unreasonable.

Self isolating (again) and wfh. Need to send out a document with multiple changes for each person, which is fair enough, and keep a record of responses for reporting back.

Person asking sends me a microscopic screen shot of what looks like 3pt characters, terrible resolution, from a spreadsheet with all the different variables. Oh, and colours vary from palest green on white to light green on luminous yellow background. So I ask nicely if I could have a copy of the SS because I can't bloody read the picture as that would enable me to run a merge and keep records. I'd be saving it well away from any departmental access, so it wouldn't bugger up their original.

No.

I can't have it. I can have a slightly larger but equally illegible picture so I can then painstakingly copy every single field into my personal version with my nose against the screen of my laptop before then doing the bit they actually 'need', the mechanics of which are apparently both a mystery and irrelevant to them. Naturally, they want me to send them my spreadsheet when I'm reporting back, so they don't have to manually copy anything. The data isn't particularly sensitive, it's just day to day things.

ARRRRRRGGGGGGHHHHHH!!!!!!

We need a real life version of Howlers and Screamers!

In any case, AIBU to request - or in this case, insist - upon having information provided in a format where it's possible to manipulate rather than have to completely duplicate the data? I don't think so...but maybe it's just another week of being confined to barracks after shielding, being really ill and taking months to recover post Covid, previous SI, more bloody lockdowns and so on that's getting to me?

YANBU. Is this someone within your company or an external client?

JellyTumble · 26/05/2021 12:47

YANBU. What reason have they given for refusing to provide it?

Twinkie01 · 26/05/2021 12:50

I'm sorry I can't read that, please send documents in a legible format, many thanks.

Over and over till they get the message

citycitycity · 26/05/2021 13:05

YANBU as PP said just keep asking

Singalongasong · 26/05/2021 13:07

There are legit reasons not to send the whole thing - you saving it somewhere else would work against Single Point of Truth gubbins. However what reason do they have for not at least giving you pasted vals as a CSV? Or pdf, you could cut and paste vals from that.

Insisting is much more professional than sending them back a screenshot in return!

Within.

It finally arrived after a protracted negotiation in the politest terms possible with me swearing profusely to my four legged associate, who took the delay as an opportunity to request a third breakfast. I still have no idea why it was a problem in the first place.

All sorted and my blood pressure's back to normal again.

Roll on the end of work today.

This is an organization with an archaic approach to technology - do you work in the public sector op?

Just one person. We are firmly in the 20th Century regarding technology and have been for at least 5 and a half years [sic].
