Claiming on insurance

Sadly lost my engagement and wedding ring.

Can find a replacement for the wedding ring like for like but not engagement. Does anyone know if it's acceptable to replace an item with a higher value item and pay the difference between what we had insured and the new item ourselves?

I did, when I lost my ring. The insurance company gave me a beaver rooks voucher so I sold it for almost face value and bought a ring I loved from an independent jeweller.

GladAllOver · 25/05/2021 21:38

That depends entirely on your insurance company as they have different policies. You'll need to ask them.

devilboughtmysoul · 25/05/2021 21:39

Erm ... seeing as we don’t know what policy you took out I would suggest speaking to your insurers ... Confused

@GladAllOver @devilboughtmysoul sorry I just meant in general, is it even an option before I approach them about it

Yes, I was a claims manager in an earlier life😁. Many insurers give vouchers (as they get a discount) you can spend them on what you want and top up...which is why suppliers give discounts.

@Userg1234 ok thanks! I don't get vouchers but the insurer pays the jeweller - hoping we can top up to get a better version rather then end up with worse than what I lost!

My insurance company sent me a prepaid card for the value of the jewelry lost. I put that towards something else entirely.

Why don't you clarify with your insurance company? It really won't be an issue.
