To want to get WhatsApp unblocked for DD and Facebook for DM

hardheadedwoman · 24/05/2021 19:27

My DD fell for the scam where one of her contacts texted asking for her to forward on a 6 digit security code which she did:

www.google.co.uk/amp/s/www.independent.co.uk/life-style/gadgets-and-tech/whatsapp-scam-hack-warning-news-b1851552.html%3famp

She’s now locked out of her account and when she asks for a verification code to be texted to her phone to re-enable it never arrives. She’s emailed WhatsApp support but no reply after a week

My DM aged 77 has also had her Facebook account disabled for no apparent reason. I helped her upload her Passport to verify her ID two weeks ago but nothing since and she still can’t log on.

Anyone got any advice please? It’s a real pain. Facebook says average manual approval of ID is 48 hours

It's asking me to register to read your link, do you have one that's free to read, I don't know what the scam is aboit

The Facebook one you probably have to wait for them to sort it out or just make a new account and write off the original one, might be much quicker and stress free

NeverMetANiceOne · 24/05/2021 19:36

Oh christ, I really don't think it was sensible to send a photo of your DMs passport, are you absolutely positive it was to Facebook and not the scalers scammers? I know a guy who got really fucked over by that scam.

I got kicked out of Facebook a little while ago, I actually made a post about it, I think it happened because I used my nickname on Facebook which apparently you are not allowed to 😕 (yet pretty much everyone I know uses a nickname) they asked me to send a picture of myself not passport?! So that sounds dodgy

Sorry here’s a different link:

www.dorsetecho.co.uk/news/national/uk-today/18912324.whatsapp-scam-look-avoid-hackers/

For Facebook it was definitely via the Facebook site, it was on the home log in page. Can she start a new account using the same email account that she used with the original FB account do you know?

You would need to use a different email address I would think.

TwoAndAnOnion · 24/05/2021 19:43

Just create a new email address.

Maybe it's me but that link only let's me see the first couple of paragraphs too

What are the scammers trying to get from the WhatsApp account?

You need a different email for a new Facebook account but you can do that in 30 seconds

hardheadedwoman · 24/05/2021 19:51

Ok maybe I’ll just help her set up a new email account and start again

For the WhatsApp scam you get sent a text looking like it has been sent from one of her contacts. It says ‘I accidentally sent you a 6 digit code I need for WhatsApp please can you screenshot it and send it back to me. Which she did

It is the 6 digit 2 step authentication code which means the user is locked out. Sorry as this is The Sun but this explains it I can’t find a different source

If she wipes data on WhatsApp does it work? Or uninstall and reinstall.

We had to for business account handling so i would believe it's real. They are trying to crack down on fake profiles
hardheadedwoman · 24/05/2021 20:05

Thanks I’ll get her to uninstall and reinstall

Just uninstalled and reinstalled and she gets this message saying a code will be sent to her phone but the code never arrives - it’s like the code is being sent so where else

Can she select "call me" - that's the guidance here: faq.whatsapp.com/iphone/verification/how-to-verify-your-number

Kona84 · 24/05/2021 20:23

What can scammers get out of whatsapp?
They can use your daughters number to request funds from her contacts.
They can harass people and blackmail using a fake number
They can sell the details on the dark web for other scammers to use.

hardheadedwoman · 24/05/2021 20:35

Unfortunately when she presses Call Me her phone doesn’t ring

OP posts:
Newschapter · 24/05/2021 20:40

It sounds like her phone has been hacked if the code is going elsewhere.

This happened to my sister and a few days later her bank called to say there was unusual activity on her account.

So whoever had hacked her phone had some details they shouldn't have had!

She had to get a new number and new accounts for everything.
