To ask if anyone has used The council Tax review service?

I had a cold call about potentially being in the wrong council tax band for years. It's about putting in a claim to get it reduced as the guy seems to think we are in the wrong band.
After he went I went on line and he appears to be correct that every house on our block is a c band while we are D. Even the houses at the end of our row of 12 houses that are double fronted and bigger.
It was a no win no fee.
There was no pressure from him. He didn't ask for any personal details or money up front.
I am guessing, like the PPI, you can probably do it yourself. I know all I did with the ppi was to put a form in and I got over 10k back in weeks.
Anyone got any experience of this?
TIA

I have tried to do it myself and failed and I'm still bitter I pay more than my neighbours 🤣
If you have the time do it yourself Martin Lewis has a good bit on it on his website about it and where to start

If you decide to persue this with him he will take a cut of your rebate.
You can easily do it yourself with the valuation office ( but be aware that your property could be the only one banded correctly and all of your neighbours could face an increase)

Just contact the council valuation office. It was a very simple process - someone came round (pre-COVID) and it was lowered. We knew it was in the wrong band as all the other houses we viewed in the immediate area were in a lower band and a similar size.

He was up front about that.
He did say that other houses on the block had a reduction in the past and talked about a group putting forward a claim as that us more likely to win than an individual and you only get one shot at an appeal. I was too slow and should have asked why we weren't included on the last round of claims.
Part of me thinks if it is as easy as the ppi claim I may as well do it myself but then I think if uts more complicated I may as well let someone do it and get some reward because I'd be unexpectedly better off anyway if the banding gets changed.

I agree about looking on the Martin Lewis site for info. There is a good section on appealing council tax banding. Go from there, maybe ask your local CAB for help too?

User27aw · 18/05/2021 19:37

I helped my PIL to appeal. Identical houses were in a lower band. The council refused the claim, Im still annoyed about it.

GeorgieTheGorgeousGoat · 18/05/2021 19:37

The only person I know who did this ended up getting the rest of the close raised to their band Blush

Tiggles · 18/05/2021 19:39

Some of our neighbours did this.
It ended up that our house got put up a band rather than there's going down. Not that I'm bitter Grin

Do it yourself. I found houses the same as ours in a different band. The valuation office tried to fob me off. I refused to back down. Then had a nice cheque for £3000 back.

Mugsen · 18/05/2021 19:48

It's really easy to do yourself. Have a look at your council website. You get back payments if they agree to change your banding. Ours was changed as ndn was on a lower band.
