My husband is an absolute TWAT!!!

It is coming on winter here in the southern hemisphere and DH is starting to light the fireplace. We have two cats and to keep the heat in DH will continuously close the hall door blocking access to the kitty litters. I tried reasoning with DH by acknowledging his reason, however, we need to come up with a solution for the cats. His reply was two bullets, then walked away laughing, saying that I have no sense of humour. I don't think IBU am I? I refuse to lock the kitty's up n this cold weather and I doubt DH will want a litter box in the kitchen/dining room for the day. DH keeps closing the door and I keep opening it. SIGH!!!! I'm open to any suggestions Mumsnetters...

Cats will crap all over the place so that's very unreasonable on his part, but I do think his comment was probably in jest! I regularly threaten to beat my beloved dog up, most recently an hour ago when my DH closed the back door so he peed in my slippers! The dog is still my best mate and my DH has been thoroughly chastised!

What do your cats want you to do, as cats usually rule the roost in a house. My three cats don't like being messed about,and don't like changes in routines.

I'm in Australia and feel your pain as it is fecking cold in Melbourne right now and I'm trying to get the fire going. Unless you are happy to piss away the heat by leaving doors open, you need to get them cats to the trays, or, even better, outside. Trays can be outside,

My animals know they have to look me in the eye and indicate the need to access the outdoors.

Internal cat flips, while well ugly, might answer in this case.

We do have a kitty litter in the dining room. I just clean up after them as they go. You can get robotic self-cleaning ones too but they’re quite expensive.

If my partner said that about the cats he would be out in the cold faster than he can blink. But luckily he loves them as much as I do. You need to express how much you don't like that kind of joke so that he won't say things like that again.

Just move the litter tray? We have a top entry one from Kmart (also in Southern Hemisphere) which is completely mess free and cost $20.

This is the kind of tray I mean. You can of course get more expensive versions which look nicer, but the top entry means they don't kick litter all over the place.

My cats are quite capable of telling me when they want to do something... or more often, when they want me to do something for them! Closing the door when you’ve got a fire lit is quite normal behaviour.

We close the door when the fire is lit. The cats let me know when they want out - normally by jumping on the back of the sofa and swiping at my head.

That sounds like a joke to me . The sort of make and I'd never hurt an animal . The solution is obvious, an internal cat flap or a covered cat tray. It al.sounds a bit.of of a fuss over nothing to me. Unless there are other issues with your DH, I'd just ignore the joke

If OP is in the same part of the Southern Hemisphere as I am, central heating is not very common.
