Are these premature perimenopause symptoms? (TMI about periods contained in thread)

Hi All,

I'm in my early 30s but have had an increasingly irregular cycle over the last six years.

In general my period is late and when it does start it is darker/browner than it used to be and takes a while to start. This time it seems to be brown and exceptionally light/barely there (as well as being 10 days late).

I don't have hot flushes but I have had a couple of years of being incredibly emotional (extreme anxiety, irritability etc.) which actually seem to have got much better this year, which makes me wonder whether I've been perimenopausal for a while.

In addition to the above I have a hairy chin (embarrassingly I actually have to shave daily as I get full-on stubble after a while), which started in my late 20s and hairy arms.

I know that the latter could be caused by something like PCOS but I don't know whether that would start so late (in my twenties I had a 28 day cycle, no excessive body hair etc.) and I'm worried that it might be premature ovarian failure.

Do these symptoms sound like symptoms of the menopause?

Thanks!

They could be signs of peri menopause- could be other things too (not helpful sorry) but I came on to say watch Davina Mccalls Sex, Myths and the Menopause. Useful insight !

Thank you Janknitti, I'll watch it :)

They could be, but given your age it’s very unusual. Have you been keeping track of your cycle and symptoms through an app or anything? A visit to the GP sounds like a good idea! They can check hormone levels etc., arrange ultrasounds on your ovaries etc.

Thanks Emmelina!

My family history is actually of late menopause so it doesn't fit with that but apparently some people just have random premature ovarian failure and it affects 1/100 people between 30 and 40.

I'm really hoping it's not that as I still don't have a family of my own and do want to have a baby in the future.

I think I'll book a GP appointment. Thanks :).
