Or is 6:45pm too late for building works?

The people whose garden backs on to mine are having a massive extension built. Works have been ongoing for 8 weeks and are due to take another 8 weeks. It’s noisy and a pain but we understand this is the reality of living near others, so we get it.

The lady whose house it is came round to speak to us before the works started and said if it bothered us to let her know. We haven’t said anything so far but I’m considering popping round now because there is still all manner of hammering and drilling going on, and it’s preventing my baby from falling asleep.

AIBU, or is this too late in the evening for building works? I don’t want to be a dick about it, but the evenings are the only respite we get from the noise (and my baby will turn into a gremlin if he doesn’t sleep soon).

I might be wrong but I'm sure in the UK in a residential area construction work is only allowed to take place Mon-Fri between 8am and 6pm and on Saturdays 8am - 1pm. In which case yanbu.

As the neighbour has said to let them know if it bothers you at all, I would just politely go round and ask them to stop work at 6pm. As they have asked you to let them know I would imagine they would be fine with this and 6pm is a reasonable time to stop work for the evening, they can still get a lot done during the day

I'd have said past 7.30 was starting to be antisocial so maybe hang on til then if you can?

I feel your pain though - both sides of our terrace have been doing constant building work this year and it's been an interesting addition to my Zoom calls (and I'm jealous because ours is a rental haha)

It would be outside permitted hours here.

That said, if they’re generally considerate and it was a one off/just this evening and not a regular thing I wouldn’t be round complaining at 6:45. I can understand a very occasional need to get something finished or whatever.

I think it's fine to go round. Just bear in mind that if they change their hours to finish earlier each day, then they won't finish in 8 weeks.

My baby goes to bed around 6:30pm, which is by no means uncommon. Construction would absolutely keep him awake. YANBU

Around these parts it's 8-6, so would be outside the allowed hours. Definitely fine to go round as it's stopping your baby sleeping after they are meant to have stopped for the day.
