To ask about real life soap opera weddings

Inspired by the clothes out of the upstairs window chat, has anyone has been to a real wedding where there has been soap opera style drama? By that I mean:

  • Jilting - either by not turning up or by running out just before they say “I will”.
  • Real love bursts in when they ask for any objections and tries to pursuance bride or groom not to do it.
  • A massive public revelation about someone being someone’s father / mother, or an affair.
  • A fight.

For the record, I haven’t.

Unfortunately yes. Friend’s wedding and the ceremony was at 10.30am! This meant that people were drinking all day long and by 11pm a huge fight kicked off between cousins and the night ended with 3 police riot vans, police dogs and blood splattered all over the floor. My poor friend just sat there in her dress in tears. Awful. The family really aren’t like that but that’s what happens sometimes when so much alcohol is involved. Certainly a memorable one 😬

I once arrived for my evening shift in the bar of a local hotel to be ushered into the back room and told to work as a pair and ring a bell if anything had kicked off... there was no music, no atmosphere and lots of people sitting around looking glum...

I thought maybe everyone had drunk too much too soon but no, a fight shortly broke out and all became clear.

After saying his vows to his bride and going off for the photos, the groom was so overcome with guilt that he confessed to the bride during the photos that he had been sleeping with her maid of honour and also had a gambling problem so had spent the money saved the wedding on online gambling and the bill to the hotel was due!!!

Several members of her family absolutely went for him whilst he was holding their child who had apparently recently had cleft palate surgery resulting in the child being dropped and the bride joining the fight! My boss called the police at that point, who came to calm things down.

Unbelievably the bride then decided to carry on with the reception and party with the children and her family all proceeded to get absolutely smashed whilst his left early!!!

It sounds outrageous but I must have working 500 weddings during my hospitality career and that’s the only one of note!!!
